Hello, @silverbloggers community. Today I continue with the series called “Attitudes Uncovered”, where I set out to observe and share small fragments of human behavior in everyday situations. The idea is not to judge, but to explore how our gestures, decisions, and reactions reflect attitudes and emotions that sometimes go unnoticed.
Unexpected Gratitude
It happened in a market in Havana.
I was standing in the checkout line when I saw an elderly woman in front of me. Her humble appearance and her hands held a can of condensed milk. It is worth noting that in that market payments were made in dollars.
When it was her turn, she extended her hand to the cashier. In it, she had a ten Cuban peso bill. The cashier shook her head and told her that it wasn’t accepted there, that payment had to be in dollars. Confusion and disappointment were reflected on the woman’s face. How was it possible to have worked all her life in a country, and that the currency she received as a pension could not be used to buy something as basic as a can of milk?
I was a bit further back in the line, and I immediately wanted to do something, but it was too late. In front of me, a couple —a woman and her husband— stepped in. The woman spoke to the cashier:
—Don’t worry, we’ll pay for her.
The man went to the shelves and came back with two more cans, several malt drinks, and a pack of cookies. He told the cashier:
—Please add this to the lady’s bag as well.
And he paid for everything. In the end, he handed the woman a ten-dollar bill, so she could leave not only with her items, but also with some money for another time when she might need to buy something else.
It was clear that, among everyone present, that couple had more financial means. In Cuba, solidarity is not lacking, but the resources to carry out gestures like that often are. Everyone felt moved by what had just happened. And the couple said:
—Today it’s her, tomorrow it could be any of us. If we can help, we do it gladly.
On their way out of the market, they ran into the woman again and asked if she lived far away so they could take her home. Fortunately, she lived nearby, and they said goodbye with a smile.
Unexpected gratitude arrives like that, without warning, with generous hands and big hearts. Because we never know when we might be the ones in need of such a gesture.

Hoy continuo con la serie llamada “Actitudes al descubierto”, donde me propongo observar y compartir pequeños fragmentos del comportamiento humano en situaciones cotidianas. La idea no es juzgar, sino explorar cómo nuestros gestos, decisiones y reacciones reflejan actitudes y emociones que a veces pasan desapercibidas.
La Gratitud inesperada
Ocurrió en un mercado en La Habana.
Yo estaba en la fila de la caja cuando vi a una señora mayor delante de mí. Su aspecto humilde y sus manos sostenían una lata de leche condensada. Cabe destacar que en ese mercado se pagaba en dólares.
Cuando llegó su turno, extendió su mano a la cajera. En ella, llevaba un billete de diez pesos cubanos. La cajera negó con la cabeza y le dijo que allí solo se podía pagar en dólares. La confusión y la decepción se reflejaron en el rostro de la señora. ¿Cómo era posible haber trabajado toda su vida en un país, y que la moneda con la que se jubilaba no sirviera para comprar algo tan básico como una lata de leche?
Yo estaba un poco más atrás en la fila, y enseguida quise hacer algo, pero fue demasiado tarde. Delante de mí, una pareja —una mujer y su esposo— intervino. La mujer le habló a la cajera:
—No se preocupe, nosotros pagamos por ella.
El hombre fue y regresó con dos latas más, varias maltas y un paquete de galletas. Le pidió a la cajera:
—Agregue esto también a la bolsa de la señora.
Y pagó todo. Al final, le entregó a la señora un billete de diez dólares, para que pudiera salir, incluso con algo de dinero, y en otra ocasión pudiera comprar lo que necesitara.
Se notaba que, de todos los presentes, esa pareja era la que más recursos tenía. En Cuba no falta la solidaridad, pero sí los recursos para gestos como ese. Todos quedamos conmovidos. Y ellos decían:
—Hoy es ella, mañana podríamos ser nosotros. Si podemos ayudar, lo hacemos con gusto.
Al salir del mercado, volvieron a encontrarse con la señora, y le preguntaron si vivía muy lejos para llevarla a su casa. Por suerte, ella vivía cerca, y se despidieron con una sonrisa.
La gratitud inesperada llega así, sin aviso, con manos llenas y corazones grandes. Porque nunca sabemos cuándo seremos nosotros quienes necesiten un gesto así.
