Today I'm going to do a departure from the usual music I share. I've always loved rock music, especially the heavy metal genre. But having grown up in the 1980's I also enjoyed some of the early new wave. Then in the 1990's I began to like some country music, which I mostly picked up on my trips back to the US. I think mainly because more country artists became more pop than country like Shania Twain and Garth Brooks.
One country artist I enjoyed was Toby Keith. I think I liked his music because he had a great sense of humor, and some of his songs are hilarious. Sadly, he died about a year ago from stomach cancer at age 62. By today's standards very young. It was a true shame.
My advice to all of you is to get regular checkups from your doctor and don't put off being checked when new or strange pains come up.
First a bit about Keith, an Oklahoma native that began working in oil fields after high school until oil prices took a dive. He then fell back on football from his high school years playing for a non professional team and formed a country band as a night gig. Eventually he made his way to Nashville, Tennessee and was signed to Mercury records. His debut album was a huge seller with a couple hits I'll share today.
I always loved this song because it's so funny. If you've ever been in a serious relationship as a guy you will get the "honey do list". Damn, I'm glad I'm single... This came off his debut album and is called "You Ain't Much Fun". I always felt it was a shame they didn't include the next line in parenthesis (Since I Quit Drinking):
This one is one of those that at times I think we all understand. Sometimes talk can get very old... But it sure makes for a great country song! Here's "A Little Less Talk and a Lot More Action":
As men we tend to think we never age, and we do our best to pretend that it doesn't. Here Toby embraces the fact that as we age we aren't exactly what we once were. In a way I think it's universal, we all want to think that we're immortal. Our great, great grandkids might well be once aging is removed from our DNA. Sadly, too late for us! This is: "As Good As I Once Was":
As a bonus I want to add his first hit, here he pays respect to the Hollywood great cowboy actors.
This hit went to number one on the charts. It's a great song embracing country roots and what it was to be a cowboy. He even mentions Hollywood greats of Roy Rogers and Gene Autry. If you ever saw the first Die Hard film, Bruce Willis refers to himself as Roy paying tribute to Roy Rogers. Gene Autry is a huge name in country films which many don't know. Watching old westerns you will realize he was a huge star, and has a road named for him to this day.

I've driven past that sign on Interstate 10 so many times, and it reminds me of his great westerns every time. It's right outside of Palm Springs, California. Here's " I Should Have Been A Cowboy":
