Hello Hello to all Hivians, Silver Bloggers and anyone else reading this.

This week's The Silver Bloggers Chronicles - Prompt 16 is ....

Things I No Longer Worry About

So, what are some of the things you worried about, and how did you learn to throw them aside?

Not a Fluffing lot!

I remember my first proper job as a Chemical or Process Engineer was in Newbury, way down in the South of England. Miles away from my home in Scotland.

I was having my first performance review by the Process Engineering manager who was my boss's boss! A bit intimidating he was ....

So he opens with ...

Edward, if you were any more laid back you'd be horizontal. so what's your secret!!

Not that distances matter much to me. I went to university in Wales which was miles from Scotland. I stayed in Edinburgh when I was 11 and my parents and siblings moved to the Orkney Islands off the north coast of Scotland.
I went from being a day boy at school to a boarder at school.

Boy oh boy, you learn to grow up quick.

I learned to live in the now!

My only worry was whether I would get a hiding from the bigger boys. A 12 year old does not have much chance against a 17 year old! But if you go radge at them with a hockey stick, they see you in a different light 🤣

But seriously I remember one of my house tutors who was so fluffing cool.

On a weeknight after dinner we would all have to sit in silence in the downstairs library in the boarding house for two hours between 7pm and 9pm. This was to do our homework etc... On a Monday Wednesday and Friday night it was the house master who sat with us. He was super serious and pretty strict and we sat in on silence.

But on Tuesday and Thursday nights it was the turn of the house tutor a man called Mr Storey.

Now there was such a laid back atmosphere on those two nights. There was no shouting etc but people talked and we all got work done.

He respected us and we respected him, and he was like a counsellor to us all.

I remember a friend of mine was worrying about something, I can't even remember what it was now, but I do remember Mr Storey telling us some amazing words of wisdom!

"Now then Roderick, do you know what worry is?"

"Eh no sir, but it's doing my head in!"

"Well Roderick, worry is just a poor use of your imagination."

"What do you mean Mr Storey?"

"Why spend your precious mental energy making up worst-case scenarios when that same energy could be used positively? Don't use your mental energy negatively, use it to appreciate the ordinary moments happening around you right now!"

I guess I took that onboard albeit subconsciously as I have lived in the now for as long as I can remember!

image.png

As for keeping up with the Joneses! Haha you know that is such a common surname in Wales that yeah I had my fair share of them when I was there at uni, never needed to keep up with them lol!

image.png

Now then you might be wondering why I put a lead image of a Golden Retriever on my chronicles post!

Well Mr Storey had the most gorgeous Golden Retriever called Toby. As our boarding house backed onto the school playing fields. We were forever playing with him which was cool, except when the wee bugger ran off with our tennis balls🤣

So yeah don't worry be happy!

Don't forget you can mention a prompt for the Chronicles if you think it is suitable...

Worry is such a weird thing when you are not mindful. Just the concept of worry as ‘suffering your imagination’ has turned things around for me a little. I have to worry some because I am responsible for taking care of a family AND run a business that pays my bills and those of our employees. Worry is acknowledging risk with takes on an important dynamic as a business owner.

Other than that, I can go through a couple mental cycles ruminating the risk and then be content that I have it in context. Then a little mindfulness to stop suffering my imagination.

Besides that, when things go really bad and I am worrying about the future, I think back to all the other world ending crises I have faced that didn’t end the world.

Besides that, when things go really bad and I am worrying about the future, I think back to all the other world ending crises I have faced that didn’t end the world.

Oh I have done that in the past once or twice! Thinking back to walking out of the jungle from an airplane crash and another time when a drunk trigger happy Gabonese soldier had me at the end of his machine gun and how I survived those perks me up no end!

Like much of life, once we put things into context things focus.

@topcomment

DAMMIT! Those are more dire crises than I have ever faced! Mine were more the trials of being a corporate sales guy or something finance related.

hehe things you never forget 🤣

I kind of expected you not to ever have been a worry-wart, dear Edward! Mr. Storey was a wise man, the very best advice to give to anyone at any age, brilliant.

Edward, if you were any more laid back you'd be horizontal. so what's your secret!!

Mr. Storey had a big role in that, not so!

hehe yes Lizzie I think Mr Storey had a big part in it!
That was a great prompt Lizzie 😀

I can't believe the time I've wasted worrying on things that never happened😤. There's still time I still worry though😌

Ah yes, I know you and your worrying nature! I just remember my grandma telling people, cheer up it may never happen!

Can't help sometimes🥵

ah yes I know!

Thanks for the curation @steemflow and @indiaunited and here is to a fantastic new week for us all!

I think it is the best advice that can be given to someone. I had a teacher who used to say: It's not about worrying. It's about taking action. I admit that sometimes anxiety and my imagination can make me wake up at 3 a.m. Sending you a hug.

You still get woken up at 3am? I know some things that are serious will make people worry. But there are far too many frivolous things that people worry about!
A worry free hug for a week being sent now!

I really enjoyed reading your post. My father also attended boarding school as a child, in Pamplona, Colombia, near the Venezuelan border.
Your experience at boarding school taught you a great lesson for life. All schools should teach children about the uselessness of negative thoughts; surely if they learned this, they could live better lives. Thanks for sharing, dear friend @tengolotodo. A big hug from Maracay.

So he went to school in another country? It was a fantastic piece of advice. Thinking about it, we were taught many valuable lessons in life that I have seen so many people struggle with. Yet many of these people think I was the one who was handicapped by not living at home as a child!
Thanks Irvin and a big Scottish hug to start your week!

My father was born in a border town, and it was much easier for them to study in Colombia than in Venezuela. He spent two or three years there. Happy day, dear friend.

Okay that was pretty cool. It helps that the language was the same!

I understand that advice intellectually but try telling my base brain that. I worry more than ever!

You know when I think about you and the weeone travelling all over the place years ago I never pin you for a worrier!

Feel the fear and do it anyway.... But it does half give me a heart attack ....😆

Great advice to younger generation we tend to fritter away good time simply second guessing oneself. Sounds like you still had those real stiff upper lip tutors who simply never appeared to bend to anything.

Lol oh yes but we were lucky, our house was relaxed to the one next door. You got the swats of the wooden clacken at the drop of a hat over there!

Preferential to accept six of the best over sitting time, always!

I couldn't read the post properly because your beautiful dogs caught my attention. No, that's not true. I'd never thought about anything Mr. Storey told you, and when I think about it, he's absolutely right. Worry is a waste of negative thoughts. If you think about it, the things we worry about are negative. Thanks for sharing that advice. I'll keep it in mind friend @sabelotodo

You are welcome Isabel and I hope you think about the advice. It works for me!

Love the contrast between the strict house master and the laid-back Mr. Storey. It proves that respect and a little positive mental energy go a lot further than fear. And of course, the memory of Toby the Golden Retriever is a great finish!

Positive mental energy really can take us much further than fear! Thanks for that and Toby was a fun pup!
