The town square in my hometown—like those in every city and town across Venezuela—is named "Plaza Bolívar." It is a space that has undergone numerous alterations—changes I consider unnecessary, as it would have been ideal to preserve its old-world charm rather than subject it to the impractical, unsightly, and dysfunctional redesigns carried out over the years, which were done solely so the municipal government of the day could illicitly profit from the projects.
La plaza de mi pueblo, al igual que en todas las ciudades y pueblos de Venezuela, se llama la “Plaza Bolívar”. Es un espacio que ha sufrido muchas modificaciones, las cuales considero innecesarias, pues lo ideal es que hubiese mantenido su encanto de antaño, y no hacerle reestructuraciones poco prácticas, poco estéticas y carentes de funcionalidad, las cuales se han hecho a lo largo de los años, sólo para que el gobierno municipal de turno pueda lucrar indebidamente de esos proyectos.
Despite the changes this space has undergone, some trees remain—or at least the existence of several of them has been respected. These trees serve as a habitat for many animal species, such as birds, iguanas, lizards, and insects; and it is precisely about the plaza's iguanas that I will speak briefly today, sharing some photos I took last week when I passed through the area.
Aún con los cambios que ha sufrido este espacio, se conservan algunos árboles, al menos se ha respetado la existencia de varios de ellos. Estos árboles sirven de hábitat para muchas especies animales, tales como aves, iguanas, lagartijas e insectos; y es precisamente de las iguanas de la plaza, que hoy les hablaré brevemente y compartiré algunas fotos que tomé la semana pasada, cuando pasé por esta área.
There is a caretaker for this plaza—specifically an Indigenous man, though I am not sure which ethnic group he belongs to—who is responsible for pruning and watering the plants and sweeping the paths. However, he also looks after the iguanas and the various birds that inhabit the area. He often feeds the iguanas fruits and vegetables and sets out containers of water for them; he whistles to them just as one would to dogs, and they come to his call to eat. I didn't manage to photograph this moment the day I was there, but perhaps I will do so later on.
En esta plaza existe un cuidador, más específicamente un indígena, no sé bien de qué etnia, quien se encarga de podar y regar las plantas y también de barrer las caminerías. Pero además de esto, este señor cuida a las iguanas y algunas aves que hacen vida en el lugar. A las iguanas él les suele dar frutas y verduras, y les pone recipientes con agua; y para ello suele silbarles tal como si fuesen perros, y ellas acuden a su llamado a alimentarse. El día que estuve por ahí, no pude tomar las fotos de este momento, quizás más adelante lo haga.
Since I was there at midday, many of the iguanas tend to seek shelter from the sun—either in the grass or among the tree foliage—but I managed to photograph these two specimens. They were perched in a tree, specifically a Venezuelan oak (Platymiscium pinnatum). I’m not exactly sure what they were doing, but I thought it was great that they can coexist peacefully in a public space.
Ya que estuve al mediodía, muchas de las iguanas suelen refugiarse del sol, ya sea en la grama o en el follaje de los árboles, sin embargo, logré fotografiar estos dos ejemplares, que se encontraban trepados de un árbol, más específicamente en un roble venezolano (Platymiscium pinnatum). No sé exactamente qué estaban haciendo, pero me pareció genial que puedan existir tranquilamente en un espacio público.
