I believe the dream of every mother is to witness the joyous occasion of their children getting settled in marriage and starting their own homes.
Sadly, I have heard of mothers who want to hoard their children all to themselves, thereby wrecking all their prospective relationships.
I am not yet a mother-in-law but I believe that I will not be a bad mother-in-law when such time arrives. I will be too thrilled with expectation to be cruel to my children and their partners.
I said that because a lot of failed marriages in my country have its root cause from difficult in-laws, especially the mothers-in-law.
It's as if they forgot how well they were accepted and treated when they got married that they tend to treat the new spouse unjustly. Others are just plain set in their old ways of clinging on to status quo so much so that they demean anyone below their family's status and thoroughly give them a hard time.
Having laid that out there in the open, I can very well say that I will be a wonderful mother-in-law to my children's spouses.
I can boldly make this claim because I am an open minded individual, full of godly wisdom and one who has gained a lot of knowledge through eye witness and experiences from a lot of marriages of relatives and friends alike.
One thing is very clear to me and that is the fact that my child will one day leave to cleave to his or her partner. I understand that a time will come when my children will grow up, get married and start on a new path of making and managing their own family. I as a parent and elder will then become an extended family member by then.
As such, I don't see any reason to consistently step into their affairs nor take charge of it. Nope, they deserve the right to make their mistakes and learn gradually.
There is no perfect manual guide for a perfect marriage. It is up to the couple to do their best with sincerity towards making their marriage work.
My role as a mother-in-law is to give sound and godly counsel, play with the grandkids, pray for the success of their marriage and finally live the remainder of my days in tranquility.....sounds pretty cool right?☺️
This is why training our kids with good values can ensure that they will grow up without making us worry too much over them, especially in the area of marriage.
