Inside the Field

The building that houses The Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago, Illinois opened in 1921 and has 1.2 million square feet of floor space. The museum’s size equals roughly to 21 football fields—an appropriate comparison when considering the Chicago Bears play across the street. .
.Much of the actual square footage is dedicated to storage and preservation.

Research in the Pritzker Laboratory is dedicated to using state-of-the art molecular techniques, supercomputers, and cryogenic storage of samples to analyze, explain and preserve the Earth's genetic biodiversity. Field Museum scientists are drawing all the branches in the Tree of Life.

Zoological research at The Field Museum is organized around six collections: Amphibians and Reptiles, Birds, Fishes, Insects (with arachnids and myriapods), Invertebrates, and Mammals.

the lions of Tsavo.

Mostly known and recognized for the 1997 movie “The Ghost and the Darkness”, these two lions are legendary. and their story begins in 1898, when the British started building a bridge across the Tsavo River, in Kenya. Colonel Patterson was who led the project: after nine months from the start of construction, the attacks started. Men were killed, and the killers were two maneless lions. The victims, in those months, amounted to more than a hundred. Colonel Bruce Patterson succeeded in killing the lions himself, in December 1898.

Currently on permanent display at the Field Museum, the lions are source and motif of scrupulous research. conducting various projects on site, in Kenya. There have been multiple studies on the Tsavo area where the lions roam, as well as their own den. Researchers are conducting genetic and ecological studies in order to better understand the circumstances and behavior of these lions.

There are ongoing studies on why these particular lions were brought to eat men. As it is known, lions are not commonly man/eaters; one of the possible reasons lies in the fact that, that specific year, and epidemic decimated the habitual preys of these hunters. Therefore, it is possible that they turned to man as a source of nourishment.

The Tsavo Lions’ skulls and skins were bought by the Field Museum in 1924 from Patterson, and it was the taxidermist Julius Friesser who succeeded in reconstructing the lions, as can be seen today.

The Javan leopard (Panthera pardus melas) is a leopard subspecies found only on the Indonesian island of Java. It is critically endangered, with a declining population estimated to be between 188 and 571 mature individuals. Habitat loss, prey base depletion, and human-wildlife conflict are major threats to its survival.

The Ancient Egypt display offers clues to ancient Egyptians’ lives on Earth
Studying mummies has taught researchers a lot about ancient Egyptians, including what they ate and what they did in their daily lives. Museum exhibits can help bring that history to life for visitors.
The burial chamber, which dates to 2400 BC, houses one of the largest collections of mummies in the United States:.

Gems and Minerals

There are so many more exhibits to explore.

Wow what a place! 21 football fields?! I would never have guessed that!

It is so nice to see a place of grand opulence like that used for the purpose of education, preservation and research. Those words together seem to lead to a lawsuit with a president but no need to get into that! ;)

Love the stories of the Kenyan lions and how they fought on the side of nature. The leopards plight, covered far away in Chicago inspires their preservation and opens eyes of young and old to gain and share the knowledge.

I sure hope you have another post or 2 about this place with the other exhibits and stories!

Yes... No talking politics! 😁

I have already done 4 other posts this week about the exhibits in the museum, birds and dinosaurs have been my favorites, but the museum offers free admission on Wednesdays to Illinois residents and I'm hoping my kids can go soon!

Plenty on offer to take one a couple of days to go through, very interesting exhibits in animal kingdom.

Thanks for showing us some of the museum, it must be a highlight going into the building itself.

Did you know that <a href='https://dcity.io/cityyou can use BEER at dCity game to buy cards to rule the world.

A place to visit in your city for sure. It looks smaller from outside, but is huge.

It is actually 150 miles away from my home, but it is the nearest big city, and my kids live there. The museum is huge!

When I saw those corridors in your pictures and the exposition halls, that gave me an idea of how monumental it is.

Incredible place. It's a fascinating exhibition. What a great tour you just announced. I can't wait to see the next post about it.

Thanks! Because they have one day each week when admission is free, I expect that you will be seeing more photos from here this winter when it's too cold to be outdoors taking pictures!

I'm sure I'm going to love it

Grey pictures Melinda.

Thanks, MIck!

WOW, qué lugar tan hermoso, tan mejestuoso.

It is an impressive museum!

Thanks for the photos. The museum has monumental and impressive architecture.

The lions are interesting, and I do remember that movie, although I didn't have many details in mind, but I do remember its general theme.

I need to go look for that movie! I don't think that I have ever seen it.

Although the film wasn't as successful as it was intended, and I read that it's even considered one of Michael Douglas's worst works, I found it entertaining. Perhaps I saw it at the right time, and my mood influenced my appreciation.

Perhaps it's time to give the film a chance and evaluate it in our current times.

I will try to watch it this week

WoW, beautiful place. 😘

It is a wonderful museum!

Yes 😘🌹

The Field Museum of Natural History seems to be a great place with nearly a century of history spread across a large campus. Judging by your photo collection, it's clear that there are historical exhibits here, but I think there's more to explore.

They change the exhibits, so there is always something new to see, and a new reason to go and visit the museum again.

So many awesome pictures, what an amazing place! The good old Ghost and the Darkness story, when the lions had nothing to eat they turned to humans. Hard to blame them really, that's what nature drives them to do. It is interesting how the pair of siblings lions ended up in Chicago. Great job!

Nature follows its own path, doesn't it. It is interesting how that story ended up in Chicago! I think Ella will be spending more time at the Field this winter when it grows too cold outdoors for taking photos!
