Hello, my friends. What a pleasure to greet you.
I really enjoy admiring the city, contemplating every detail, every crack. That's why I've been observing this majestic building for some time now. I used to see it every time I went to the University during my 1st year, and it always caught my attention. I imagine its architecture and impressive size don't go unnoticed by anyone. It's located at the intersection of Avenida de los Oficiales and 8th Street, today 29E and 76th streets, right in front of one of the entrances to the Ciudad Escolar Libertad.
I always wanted to know what it was and what it is today. So, taking advantage of my return to classes, I took several photos and set myself the task of investigating. I found out that for many years, this was the residence of Andres Policarpio Pereira y Torres, who held the position of Secretary of Agriculture, Commerce, and Labor during the government of Gerardo Machado, one of Cuba's presidents before the triumph of the revolution. After 1959, it has had different uses, all linked to the Ministry of Education.
At first glance, you can see the unfortunate deterioration and decay of this building. However, I close my eyes and I can see its splendor, its colors, and even the high-society parties that were certainly held there. It's sad to see how time takes its toll and has left its mark on this mansion, a place that, as you can see, was a magnificent site. But, like everything in this life, if things aren't cared for and maintained, it's impossible to preserve them.
In its patio, there is a unique dovecote (speechless) that was made using a tree trunk. Its large columns and barred windows have beautiful details that enhance its beauty. It has a garden, and at the entrance, a bust of Martí.
Whenever I approach the place, I see some open windows, but all the entrance doors have chains and padlocks, which is why I haven't been able to go inside to snoop around. One of the neighbors in the area (Buena Vista) told me that several families live there now, but before that, it was one of the libraries in the Playa municipality. My classmates are amused by my curiosity and wonder why I take so many photos. Then I have to tell them the story of a digital platform where I post daily, etc., etc., etc.
Maybe one day I'll be able to enter and see its interior spaces with my own eyes, but so far, I haven't had any luck with that matter; I never see a soul around there. That sets my imagination flying, and I start to think that perhaps it's a "haunted" mansion and its inhabitants could well be vampires who can't go out in the daylight because they risk melting in the sun, or perhaps ghosts, souls in pain wandering in search of solace.
For now, I'm content with looking at these exterior spaces that I'm sharing with you. And just in case, I'll toss a cross, a crucifix, a garlic clove, a wooden stake, a rosary, and even a little holy water into my bag.
