MOON Season 1 Winner Announcement

in Hive Pizza8 days ago

We have finally gone through the data, engaged in deep community discussion, and made our final decisions, and after review, we have:

142 players who earned rewards!

With a total reward pool for Season 1 ending up at 116761.44 PIZZA tokens - not too shabby; that's more than 3% of the current total supply and closer to 5% of the circulating supply!

With that amazing news up front, we had a successful, if shorter than expected, first Season of MOON. Let's discuss some expectations and player concerns we heard regarding the outcome.

Rewriting "the rules"

We will be having a very close look and likely rewrite of the rules of the game, largely and entirely due to the end-of-season results. We hope to encourage a lighter atmosphere of onboarding and pushing downward moving forward in Universe 1.

It's very challenging for us to arbitrate "Rules as Written", "Spirit of the Game", and also come to a satisfying result for the season, all at the same time. We have tried to balance this in our final decision.

Final Results - in a few words

@pharesim and The Curators alliance do indeed win the Win Condition for Season 1. While their behavior violates the "rules as written", we believe their heart was in the right place in working together as an alliance to achieve the goal of the season, in a creative way that played to their own advantages over their disadvantages, relative to other teams.

That said, we are providing a stiff "slap on the wrist" for @pharesim, reassigning three records that were earned with help from other players. The three records are the following:

Solar Satellites Record - worth 376.65 PIZZA

  • This will be given to the second-place satellite builder, @Hurtlocker

Graviton Research Record - worth 376.65 PIZZA

  • As no other player had this record, it will be sent to @Moon.deposit2, the Season 2 rewards pool.

Ion Cannons Record - worth 376.65 PIZZA

  • This will be given to @Mrtats, the second-place record holder.

Additional modifications to the payouts:

We, both admins "Eco" and "HT", played the game and decided to forfeit all our End of Season rewards to create a special reward for three players who showed exemplary behavior beyond just playing the game. This will add ~700 PIZZA tokens each to the prize package for each of these three players.

Top Bug Reporter - @mrtats

  • Mrtats sent us several detailed bug reports. For some bugs, he took additional time to test and help identify the root cause thoroughly. MOON is an open-source game, and we highly appreciate players who help efforts to make it better for future players.

Top Translator - @incublus

  • We were amazed by Incublus's efforts with language translation. The whole Turkish language was completely overhauled from top to bottom. Many players have raised issues related to language translation, and we rely on help from the community to identify and fix these issues. The game supports Spanish, Turkish, French, German, Russian, Portuguese, and Polish languages.

Top Cordiality - @txracer

  • Txracer exhibited overall politeness and a calm demeanor while helping other players learn how to play and participating in heated debates about the game.

What's Next for MOON

We will distribute the rewards "soon" and provide a more detailed look at the list in a follow-up post, as there is a lot of work to do moving forward, and we want to keep pressing on all fronts.

A few players have 24 hours to link their Hive accounts (announced in-game), and then rewards will fly out into wallets. We did our best to not only get everything wrapped up as much and as fast as possible, but also to automate the workflow so that it requires less time and effort next time.

One of these players needs our help to create a Hive account. This is amazing! Since one of our goals is to onboard new people to Hive through the game.

Unlinked accounts will essentially donate any rewards they have earned to the Season 2 reward pool, so there is no pressure if a player does not want to create a HIVE account yet.

Preparing for Season 2

We have decided that we need to take our time and carefully consider and address a few key issues before launching Season 2. It is still our intention to do so "as soon as possible", so watch for upcoming announcements that will start framing the rollout.

In the meantime, please enjoy a Story mode Mission and very soon a Tutorial Mode mission in the still very much "alive" Universe 1.

I fricking enjoyed the game, and I was actually surprised why not more attacked me...

Please Don't feel like you are going to "hurt my feelings" people... its just a game! (hopefully if I attack you, you will feel the same 😆)

On the other note, if people don't attack me, I get stronger :D - so let me play the sentimental card 😜 and please don't attack me! 🤣

Eager for those changes in the rules, I think it will help to have a place people can check for the rules at all times, such as (suggestion) a gitbook for example. And also creates transparency around how things are changed (and even on a more advanced state, some sort of automatic indication to players as a "feature", if they are either about to break the rules or have already broken them).

Can also be a hive post but, probably the gitbook is easier (and you can post updates on Hive about changes made on gitbook, after they are sort of releasable).

The idea of this game's rewards system is genius, and I hope many other games take ideas from it. Cause I think it's really a healthy one for startups... even for already developed games (as proven here so far).

I'm glad you enjoyed it, and thank you for your feedback. We're trying to strike the right balance for different types of players. Game parameters can make aggressive attacking more lucrative.

yep lots of work! 💪

GG @pharesim!

And The Curators!

Well played 🙂

To be honest, decision taken doesn't really jive with me.

If @Hurtlocker and his alliance knew they could do this before hand, they could have pulled the same ending. They could have worked together to achieve the same ending.

Only advantage the Curators had was that they were playing by different rules than the rest of us. You guys acknowledge this, and give the win to the Curators where they should've been disqualified.

And unfortunately, I feel like this decision was taken to spare the feeling of some players and avoiding hard decisions rather than doing what would have been just.

I wouldn't read too much into it!

I had a great time playing and hope you did too!

Good luck out there man!

You nailed the main pain point for sure. Fwiw, I think pharesim's experience and determination to end the game as soon as possible gave him the edge towards the same results in any alternate history, or alternate post-ending.

As a consolation, now we can make some easy changes that keep getting repeatedly harped on, that we didn't feel comfortable changing mid season.

First of all, congratulations @pharesim!

Yes, I believe it is a wise decision. Thank you, @ecoinstant!

Looking forward to Season 2, hopefully with more clarity on rules and more predictability over the rewards distribution.

Without following the drama pre and post this announcement (I'm sure there must be some), I believe the decision made was relatively balanced given the circumstances. Hopefully, in season 2 the role of an alliance and its limits will be better defined, when pursuing common goals. I like to play this kind of games cooperatively, but I have no problem being a lone wolf (more or less), if that's what's required to stay within the rules - in a way it's easier, because you just worry about your own development and decisions.

Overall a fun season. Had a great time with my teammates! Let's see what we all learned for season 2 and how that will be.

Well said! Looking forward to next Uni as well!

The wording could have been a little better... With or without the rule thing, @pharesim played a fantastic game, and could have deserved more than a <<stiff "slap on the wrist">> (not talking about prizes here). But I guess the admins had to navigate different view points and emotions the best they could...

All the best!

I’m really glad he decided to play and I think he made it a better experience overall.

I had a great time!

Congratulations to the winners! I am looking forward to next uni. I hope we see more frequent skirmishes at all levels in that one!

I don't know what will be my reward but it was an honor to be a part of this team. I'd love to see more Hive games rise and shine

Thats nice!! Good to see the game evolving :)

Thank you very much for the opportunity to relive this game that I had a lot of fun with many years ago! I hope everyone enjoys universe 1 while we continue to wait for the new challenge!

For me, it was great fun to play this first universe. If rewards or not, it was never about that for me.

For feedback - maybe it is of little help for someone

  • The rules need to be in a more prominent place. So you can have access to it while you are logged in. It is only in the login screen and very small. Make them accessible in your main menu somewhere, so everyone can read them and access them ingame

  • I think it was not a good way to make a public beta test for the game. A public test for me is made to find flaws in the game - weather it´s bugs, or also missinterpreted/unclear/missing rules, things that can be argued about, things that are unclear.

If you put a big reward to a public flaw test, and also give people the opportunity to spend 2000 Dollars for a first test game, of course people get pissed, there is arguments, there is frustrations, and people will not continue playing because they might not understand certains decisions, etc.

That´s what makes is the sadest point in all this for me. It´s like you ruined parts of your game already in your first public test. That is bad marketing, and could have been worked out way better for me. Damage is done in some parts already.

For me it would have been much better to make a first public test, invite a few hundred people, give everyone that plays until the end of the goal is reached a little reward for helping test.

  • There is no clear communications of the admins. Even in this post, I miss a very clear statement about cheating, about the rewards.

What is cheating exactly?? Yeah it might be very clear for experienced players, but us beginners (never played anything like OGame) we don´t understand much.

Is someone still getting the endgame reward? Not clear for me also.

So now, "cheating" is seen before it is cleared up exactly, but rewards are still payed out? This is what I understand from this post... And if this is so, you mean it´s ok to bend the rules like you mean them (hopefully you will make them more clear now) in the future and still earn rewards?
What kind of message does that send to players? We have rules, but yeah, just bend them you will get your rewards anyways? Why making rules then?

Sorry for this feedback. But I think this game is a great one to have on Hive, and I have been a massive PIZZA supporter ever since. And I want to help making this community more active again, that´s why I have to speak my mind about feedback.

The test universe lasted 7 weeks, longer than season one. Unfortunately tho we invited hundreds, only about 15 showed up to test.

Well ok I didn´t know anything about the test universe. I didn´t know about any invites. I just think it would have been much better to treat this first very public game as an open beta test under different conditions like I described.

I hope everything settles amicably.
I am always happy to see HIVE GAMES.

Thank you very much for the update and #FUN opportunity.

Thank you for the update. As somebody that only joined mid-season, and was attacked a couple of times which delayed my progress, I had a lot of fun!
So many options and dimensions, had no idea I would check my metal/silicone/uranium inventory so often.
Will look into the story mode mission, sounds like fun.
For Season 2, looking forward to seeing what you have planned. Some great suggestions in the replies as well.
I would agree that the player base and attacking them, isn't sustainable. Greatest example is crownrend.
Not allowing bots is a critical aspect as well.
Again, congrats to all!

I struggle to write meaningful comments on posts I helped write. But I want to summon these robots with my commands.
