Christmas, Old & New

in The Pub2 months ago

This year Christmas feels a bit different for me, but not in a bad way. It's not less, or bad, it's just different.

While I was decorating my tree yesterday morning (yes, that's the custom here, you decorate your tree on the 24th, not before), was thinking of how many times I have decorated our Christmas tree with those decorations I have since I was a child.

Each Christmas means celebration with the family, but as life happens, over the years the family has changed as well. Some people have joined, others unfortunately had to leave as their time was up. It's a reminder of how short life is and that we should make the most of it, shape it as we want and enjoy every moment of it.

Last night we had Christmas dinner at my brother's. Unfortunately my nephew was missing as he was working the afternoon shift, so there was no celebration for him with the family, but we're making it up for it tonight.

As I mentioned in one of my previous post, a lifestyle change is what I'm going through, that started 47 days ago and although last night I made an exception, I'm planning to continue it, till I reach my goal.

Someone told me that it's a really bad time to start a diet and lifestyle change before Christmas, which I understand completely, but this time I have a different opinion on the matter. When exaggerating got you where you are (whatever you have exaggerated with), postponing your lifestyle change start, just to exaggerate more, won't do you any good.

People usually promise to start a diet or lifestyle change on the 1st of the month, on Monday, tomorrow or whatever start date they choose, to be able to continue what they are not doing right, a little bit longer.

Saying no to whatever you've been abusing is not easy, especially during holidays when you have an abundant offer, but basically that's the plan and the only way out of the bad situation you put yourself in due to lack of self control.

As I said earlier in this post, 47 successful days are behind me already and so far 30 % of my goal is achieved. When you think of it, it's not a result to neglect, of at least it is not for me. I feel way better already, some of my old clothes, that have been put away for better days I can use already, but the biggest reward is another one.

This Christmas I knew I'm not going to cancel what I have achieved, just because it's the festive season. The menu was known before the event took place and knew it's suitable for my diet, but there were cookies, cakes, other Christmas sweets that I knew are going to call my name. You don't know how strong you're going to be, till you're put to the test and I can tell you, I passed the test (not going to use with flying colors here). After eating one roll of stuffed cabbage, without bread, felt that my stomach was already full and could not eat another one. So I took a bite of the walnut and poppy seed bejgli and that was it. I'm not saying my daily calorie intake was not exceeded, but not doubled, or tripled.

Today, at Christmas lunch, this is what I allowed myself to have. It's a dish that my diet does definitely not allow, so that's why is just a small portion of it and only today. Trust me, after eating it, I was so full, could not even think of having another bite of anything.

Christmas, Old & New

They say old habits die hard and most likely it's true in the majority of cases. Christmas is a tough test as this is the time when everyone allows themselves to exaggerate, plus in some cases you also need to stand up for yourself and defend your decisions when others try to make fun of you or mock you for keeping to your plans. It was not my case as my decision of not eating everything was respected, but I still had to have the necessary self control.

Unfortunately there's no way to bring back those who are not with us anymore, you won't have the same Christmas every year in this regard, so each Christmas is going to be different, but that doesn't mean you have to keep your old (and bad) habits going.

New Years Eve is going to be the same for me. I'll allow myself a small deviation, but not much and can start the New Year with results already in my pocket, instead of starting from zero. It's the biggest gift you can give yourself. It feels good.

Last, but not least, I'd like to with everyone a Merry Christmas and all the best!

Merry Christmas! I think lifestyle changes are great to start anytime. That is great that you were able to not break your diet even on Christmas, but most diets allow for a cheat day once in a while...

Merry Christmas to you too!

I think lifestyle changes are great to start anytime.

We fully agree on that. If your current lifestyle is not good or healthy for you, why wait and do more damage to yourself?

Yes, my diet allows me high cocoa content chocolate, a small portion occasionally.

Congrats on the change, I started years ago, and it's hard with how yummie things are on the holidays. It is so worth it when old friends tell me how good I look.
Merry Christmas and a happy New Year to you!

Thank you and congrats to you too as I know how difficult it is to keep your results after the you finish your diet and keep the lifestyle going.

Merry Christmas and a happy New Year to you too!

You are strong willed and will reach your goals like you always do. I cheat and would rather exercise as diets are not designed to be fun. When do the decorations come down? We have decorations for the tree passed on by previous generations and nothing Chinese about those as they are ancient.

I cheat and would rather exercise as diets are not designed to be fun.

No, diets are not fun, that's not their purpose but there's no lifestyle change without changing your eating habits.

When do the decorations come down?

That depends on the tree and the family habits. We have real pine trees, which don't last 10 years, but mid January I think is a good period to throw it out. After that, they start to lose their leaves and all you get is a big mess on the floor.

Yes a real tree would make a mess on the floor if left too long. Lifestyle changes are the hard part and why I will exercise for a period of time lose the weight, feel better and may then change my habits. I have in the past so we shall see next time. You are doing well so you need to keep it up and you may find your inner gym bunny.

Bad habits are not difficult to break if there is discipline and contentment and you have it, so no matter how much you try something outside of the diet you will be on schedule and I know you will succeed in what you want.

The decorations look beautiful and that final dish is delicious. Merry Christmas!🎄✨

It depends on what you want more, to keep your habits or reach your goals.

Thank you for the nice words. I will succeed, I know that as I've been ready when I started, both mentally and physically.

Merry Christmas to you too! 🎄🎅🤗

Reach your goals, no doubt about it!

Big hug!💗

Hey, I'm just too busy that days, but wanted to step up to wish you merry Christmas and good holidays

Merry Christmas to you too and happy holidays! 🎄🎅🎁

No worries, just enjoy the season with your loved ones.

Congrats for sticking to your plan to take better care of yourself. I agree, even though it is the holidays, it is best to stay on track to meet your goals. I started a keto-low carb lifestyle change two months ago. It was an enormous task for me with having to cook for hubby that loves, bread, sweets, rice, and pasta dishes. But I'm doing my best to stay as keto friendly as I can. I know how difficult it can be, so I wish you all the best and luck in reaching your goal. The new year will bring us both better health!!!!

Thank you dear @sunscape. I know about keto but not familiar with it to the letter. However, low carb is my goal too. I have an app that tells me how much fat, carb and protein I had each day.

Cooking for non dieters, while on diet is a challenge, but you can do it. I do the same and even the temptation is there, I want my goal reached more than those dishes :)

Congrats to you too and good luck as well!

That looks delicious! I went to the other extreme and ate pretty much nothing for Christmas. Long story...

That is not good either. I hope everything is ok.

It will be :P

According to the latest scientific data, it doesn't matter how much or what you eat—the main thing is not to exceed your daily calorie intake, which is different for everyone. No one can tell you that 1,500 calories a day is your norm. Your metabolic rate is what matters. And if you're eating very little and gaining weight, you need to look the other way—increase your metabolic rate. There are various ways to do this—in fact, you can go into this endlessly. I wish you good luck in this difficult endeavor )))

Thanks @russia-btc.

Not just according to the latest scientific data, it has always been like this. The calorie deficit that counts, the difference between the intake and burnt, but obviously the body has to have the necessary amount to be able to function. I know my limit, so no worries.

No beer either as it means only empty calories and I hate it too 🤣

The scientific data was a sarcastic comment about a bunch of teachers on Instagram and other platforms. They start their videos like that and come up with various programs that don't work but sell well as a new way to lose weight quickly. I haven't drunk beer in a long time either—maybe I'll try it for New Year's, maybe not. At almost 50, I'm managing my weight, but it's a very tiring task to control my stomach 🤣
Merry Christmas! 🌲☃️

Oh yes, those who know best and know everything as they have to sell you some miraculous app or diet. Well, I'm not a fan of buying any paid miracle or cure as you can do it on your own with a little knowledge and time spent on watching what you eat and how much. Those apps and diets are for those who are not ready and want a miracle 😂

Controlling your stomach is challenging, but only at the beginning 😉

Hey @erikah, here is a little bit of BEER from @russia-btc for you. Enjoy it!

I'm glad to hear that you stick to your lifestyle goals, even during the festive season. However, in my opinion, we only live once. This holiday season, I'm guilty of eating a lot of food. I also track my usual calories (which are 1,300–1,800 calories), but now I think it doubled or tripled. Wishing you the best in your lifestyle goals!

However, in my opinion, we only live once.

Yes, we only live once and we decide how we live our lives and I don't want to live how I lived lately.

Thank you for the nice wishes, I also wish you all the best and to reach your goals, whatever those are.

"People usually promise to start a diet or lifestyle change on the 1st of the month, on Monday, tomorrow or whatever start date they choose, to be able to continue what they are not doing right, a little bit longer." I completely agree with these words. I must make certain changes in my life and I have been thinking about writing down my resolutions for the new year. But, I'll follow your example of starting those changes right away... to enjoy their benefits sooner. Thank you for your post that opened my eyes on this. May you achieve success in all your goals - including your diet - and Merry Christmas

Thank you @luisfe.

I hate New Year resolutions and thin most people are only writing them to look good (so they think they would look anyway) but only a few are keeping to their plans.

Start you lifestyle change as soon as physically possible and I wish you all the best. Merry Christmas to you too!

Small indulgence won't derail you. Cheering you on for the diet success. Stay strong💪

Small indulgence won't derail you.

It depends. if you find an excuse to deviate from your plans now, there will always be an occasion for an excuse.

Thanks for the wishes.
