I should have listened to the woman. I should have known better.
But the beauty of that rechargeable white blender couldn't let me.
It's not like I didn't have blender at home, but the thought that this particular one is rechargeable made me extremely happy. I could blend anything at anytime I want, with or without electricity. I just needed to charge it. Besides, it was portable and also comes with it's personal straw. It's perfect for travels, picnics.
As I admired it, a woman beside me said gently,
"I have a blender like this one. It didn’t last up to a month. It's useless. It can't blend anytime hard. just leave it and buy something else"
She pointed to a manuel blender.
"This will last for years. And you won't have to worry about electricity"
"Oh! Thank you ma" I replied without looking at her.
just to be polite. But deep down, I knew I wasn't going to let go. I quietly waited for her to buy whatever she was buying while I pretend to be searching for something else.
I couldn't take my eyes off the beautiful, white portable, rechargeable blender. It's sliver buttons, sleek designs. Everything looks so perfect.
"How much is it?" I asked the seller as soon as the woman left.
"13,000 naira" he politely answered.
I reach into my bag, brought out the money and paid for it.
I told myself "I can manage it. Maybe the woman was overloading hers or didn't know how to use it properly" . I believed I would maintain it better.
At home, I happily unboxed my newly acquired blender, washed and dried it with a clean towel. I was too excited to wait another day.
I brought out some fruits from the fridge and tried it for the very first time.
Guess what happened?
It worked perfectly. Smooth, fast, and clean.
I smiled.
"That woman must be jealous" I thought.
"Maybe she wanted me to walk away, so she could buy it herself".
The next day, I tried blending banana, milk and avocado. It was also perfect. Smooth and fast.
This continued for about a week, until I started hearing strange sounds each time I pressed the button. But I ignored it. "It's nothing", i told myself.
But by the fourth week, The Story changed.
It could no longer blend anything except water.
The blades would turn for a few seconds and then stop.
I tried everything,I charged it, I washed it, I dried it and I also let it rest for a week. But no result. It just refused to work.
That's when it hit me, the woman was right all along.
The blender that glittered so beautifully was now completely useless.
If only I could rewind time. I would have listened to her advice. I would have picked the manual one she pointed at, or manage the one at home.
Now, whenever I look at that blender, I no longer see beauty. I JUST FEEL REGRET.
Now I know _ all that glitters isn’t gold. Never again.
