I cannot count the number of times I have wished to have super powers. Right from when I was a kid, I either wanted to be barbie, super mario or whichever super hero piqued my interest at the time. It got to a point where I only wanted backpacks or gifts customised with these super heroes. If my school bag didn't have anything pertaining to Super Mario, I wouldn't want it.
I literally lived and breathed fictional superheroes. This is one of the reasons why my parents didn't have any problems when my brothers introduced me to real action movies at a young age. My brothers were kind enough to give me options whenever they held the remote control; I either watched 'the walking dead' or I went to bed. I always went with the former.
Over the years, my perspective of superheroes has changed a lot. I can barely keep track of them. I was engaged in a conversation with a friend sometime back and he asked me to choose between DC or Marvel. I said none of the above and his response was 'that explains a lot'. I didn't know what his response met until months later when I walked in on people actively arguing about which party was better. Everyone in the last room picked a side and I was totally clueless.
Many of the super heroes I have seen and actually admired haven't been part of either DC or Marvel production and this leads me to introduce the superpower I would love to have. "Photographic memory."
People may claim to have photographic memories while others may say that this isn't a super power but if you think that being able to recite numbers or words verbatim after looking at them for only a few seconds isn't a superpower, then I don't know what is. As you would imagine, I have only seen people with photographic memories in movies just like other superheroes.
I recently saw the movie "Suits", a really nice movie (if you haven't seen it, you should really check it out). The movie is basically about law firms, law associates and the likes. Amongst the associates is a young man with photographic memory. He can literally just look at ten pieces of paper for a minute and still replicate, word for word, every single thing in those pieces of paper. It doesn't stop there; as long as he has seen these details, he never forgets them. Ever. I couldn't help but wonder what my life would be like with such a superpower.
With power comes great responsibilities and I can't exactly say to what extent I would use this power but one thing I'm certain of is the fact that schooling would be a walk in the park for me. I could literally read all my textbooks the night before the exams and I'm good to go. I know that this would be a dream come true for many people out there, especially for those who have to work and school at the same time.
Also, photographic memory would come in very handy while making many of my creative works. One person in history who was alleged to have photographic memory is Leonardo da Vinci and need I tell you how astounding his artworks were. Thriving in the art world wouldn't be so hard with a photographic memory.
In the long run, this power could help me save lives as I do not have to make reference to books when patients are in critical conditions. I could easily tap into my memory and get any information I need provided I have consumed the content prior to the time.
To reiterate, having a photographic memory would be a dream come true but so far, this is only a fiction of people's imagination as there hasn't been any solid proof of the existence of people with this ability. Nonetheless, if I were to choose to have a special power or ability, it would be to have an eidetic memory.
