The idea of a computer on wheels is starting to shape up. This is one of the main drivers behind my view that we are going to see two automobile manfacturers in the future: Tesla and the Chinese companies.

In this video I discuss how software engineering is becoming paramount and is what is providing these entities major leads over legacy auto. This is truly horrific for the Germans who lack the technology in this area to compete. The US, China, and Japan are better positioned although not necessarily within the individual companies.

LEO Power Up Day - January 15, 2024

Summary:

In this video, Task discusses the importance of automotive software engineering and the challenges faced by traditional car manufacturers in adapting to the software-oriented future of the automotive industry. He highlights Tesla and Chinese car companies like BYD as examples of companies leading in this transition, contrasting them with legacy automakers like Volkswagen, General Motors, and Toyota, who are struggling with software development. Task emphasizes the significance of owning and controlling the software platform in cars and expresses concerns about companies relying on external entities like Huawei, Apple, or Google for software solutions. He mentions partnerships in the industry, such as Honda with ChatGPT and companies working on integrating chatbots, autonomous driving, infotainment packages, and mixed reality into vehicles. Task underlines the need for car manufacturers to develop their software capabilities to stay competitive in the increasingly tech-driven automotive landscape.

Detailed Article:

In the video, Task delves into the realm of automotive software engineering, shedding light on the crucial role software plays in the future of transportation. He kicks off by pointing out the struggles traditional car manufacturers face in adapting to the software-centric nature of modern vehicles, singling out Volkswagen, General Motors, and Toyota as examples of companies grappling with software development issues. Task underscores the fact that legacy automakers have traditionally outsourced software design to suppliers, which now poses a significant challenge as software becomes increasingly integral to the automotive industry's evolution.

Drawing a sharp contrast with these struggles, Task highlights industry frontrunners like Tesla and certain Chinese car companies, particularly BYD, for their proactive stance in software development. He notes the importance of owning and controlling the software platform in vehicles, offering companies the autonomy to design and integrate features as they see fit, which could potentially be hindered when relying on external tech giants like Huawei, Apple, or Google.

Task also discusses the emerging trends in the automotive sector, such as partnerships between automakers and tech companies like Honda's collaboration with ChatGPT and the integration of chatbots, autonomous driving, infotainment packages, and possibly mixed reality technologies into future vehicles. He emphasizes the interconnected nature of these advancements and underscores the significance of companies improving their in-house software capabilities to remain competitive and lead in innovation within the automotive space.

Furthermore, Task touches on the concept of a fully connected and interactive transportation ecosystem, envisioning a future where vehicles act as interconnected nodes, potentially facilitating services like in-vehicle payment systems and enhanced vehicle-to-vehicle communication. He speculates on the incorporation of mixed reality technologies into vehicles, highlighting the necessity for companies to advance their software development efforts to keep pace with the evolving industry landscape.

In conclusion, Task prompts industry players to consider the long-term implications of neglecting software development in the automotive sector. He raises pertinent questions about where companies relying on external sources for software solutions might stand in the coming years, urging them to prioritize enhancing their software capabilities to thrive in the tech-driven future of transportation.
