Today I will talk to you and show you a place that I met, thanks to a favor I was doing for some friends. It is the Cimarrón hill, a place full of history and natural beauty that I was fortunate to discover during an unexpected tour of the island.
My day began in a relaxed way, since I had planned this weekend to rest to the fullest. However, some friends who live on the mainland, in Caracas, are interested in acquiring a piece of land here on the island. They asked me to look at it and do some research about the area. I had no problem in helping them, besides it would be a good opportunity to get to know a new corner of this beautiful island.
So my husband and I left without knowing the place very well. We headed towards La Mira street, but at some point we had to make a stop to ask, since we were not clear about the way.

Mi día comenzó de manera relajada, ya que este fin de semana lo había planificado para descansar a plenitud. Sin embargo, unos amigos que viven en tierra firme, en Caracas, están interesados en adquirir un terreno aquí en la isla. Me pidieron el favor de que lo viera e indagara un poco sobre la zona. No tenía problema en ayudarles, además sería una buena oportunidad para conocer un nuevo rincón de esta hermosa Isla.
Así que mi esposo y yo salimos sin conocer muy bien el lugar. Nos dirigimos hacia la calle La Mira, pero en algún momento tuvimos que hacer una parada para preguntar, ya que no teníamos claro el camino.
We saw a local man riding his horse along the roadside and we asked him and he very kindly took us to the place and I told him that I was enchanted by the vegetation.
After checking out the land of my interest, the man got back on his horse and told us he would show us a hill, and that is how we arrived at Cimarron Hill. This hill has its charm and urban history that make it special. The locals say that in the past, in this place were located the magnetite mines. This hill is located between the sectors Aricagua and El Tirano, in the municipality of Antolín del Campo, in the state of Nueva Esparta.
Vimos un lugareño montado en su caballo por el borde de la carretera y a el le preguntamos y muy amablemente nos llevó al lugar y le dije que quede encantada por la vegetación.
Después de revisar el terreno de mi interés, el hombre volvió a montar su caballo y nos dijo que nos mostraría un cerro, y así fue como llegamos al cerro Cimarrón. Este cerro tiene su encanto y su historia urbana que lo hacen especial. Cuenta el lugareño que en el pasado, en este lugar estuvieron ubicadas las minas de magnetita. Este cerro se encuentra entre los sectores Aricagua y El Tirano, en el municipio Antolín del Campo, dentro del estado Nueva Esparta.
I love to ask about the stories and legends of the places I visit. I believe that many times these stories pass from generation to generation without being captured in any document, and end up being lost over time. What I enjoy the most is to listen to the emotion with which he tells it and with a great pride of living in the area. So much so that the local, apart from showing me the land I went to see, was enthusiastic to share more about the place.
Me encanta preguntar sobre las historias y leyendas de los lugares que visito. Creo que en muchas ocasiones estos relatos pasan de generación en generación sin quedar plasmados en ningún documento, y terminan perdiéndose con el tiempo. Lo que más disfruto es escuchar con qué emoción la cuenta y con un gran orgullo de vivir en la zona. Tal fue así que el lugareño, aparte de enseñarme el terreno que fui a ver, se mostró entusiasmado en compartir más sobre el lugar.
According to the local, the magnetite was formerly extracted from the island and transported by train, which was a fascinating revelation to me, since Margarita had the first and only railroad. He explained to me that the railroad lines went to the area of Manzanillo, from where the magnetite was extracted from the island by ships, due to the richness of this mineral in these lands.
Unfortunately, we could only see the Cimarrón hill from a distance, as some nearby land belongs to landowners who were not present and prevent access by car. This left me with the promise to return another time to explore it further.
Según el lugareño, antiguamente la magnetita era extraída de la Isla y transportada en tren, lo que me resultó una revelación fascinante, pues Margarita tuvo el primer y único ferrocarril. Me explicó que las líneas ferroviarias iban hasta la zona de Manzanillo, desde donde se sacaba la magnetita de la isla por barcos, debido a la riqueza en estas tierras de este mineral.
Lamentablemente, solo pudimos ver el cerro Cimarrón desde la distancia, ya que algunos terrenos cercanos pertenecen a propietarios que no estaban presentes y que impiden el acceso en automóvil. Esto me dejó con la promesa de volver en otra oportunidad para explorarlo más a fondo.
At the end of the day, what started as a simple tour to see an unknown terrain in a new area of the island for me, turned into an enchanting experience. I discovered a hill full of history and natural beauty. Therefore, I could not fail to share this experience with you.
