Match 25 - Germany 1-1 Switzerland
A bright and pressing Switzerland took an early lead in Frankfurt and then set about absorbing pressure and shots. A win not only put them through to the next round, but would do so as group winners. With time running out it looked like the first dent had been put in the hosts tournament. Then, 2 minutes into stoppage time, Füllkrug swept in the equaliser and tense German faces resolved into relief and joy. Both teams are still through but at least, in German eyes, the natural order is preserved.
Match 26 - Hungary 1-0 Scotland
For the second consecutive Euro's Scotland finish the campaign with 1 point, and an early exit. The defeat to Germany was excessive. The draw with Switzerland deserved but disappointing, and thus again Scotland stepped into the last chance saloon of major tournament football, and sunk to glorious defeat. As we say back home 'twas aye thus.
The lack of a cutting edge did for Scotland. While they had the majority of possession it's telling taht Hungary managed 14 shots to Scotland's 4.
Possession in the Hungary half was smothered when it came to the penalty box as Hungary defended stoutly and smartly.
When Stuart Armstrong tumbled in the box with Orbán wrapped round him the cries for a penalty where as loud as anything heard in the stadium. THe disbelief when the claim was waved away without even a VAR check will leave a bad taste in many a Scot's mouth, even as they know that if it had been given it would have been a soft penalty to get.
The coup de grace came in the 100th minute - there had been an extensive injury delay for Barnabas Varga who was stretched off and straight to hospital - as Csoboth mishit his shot and it speared past befender and goalkeep into the net.
