Apples and Pears — ArchonApp

Big apple

Each morning after a morning walk and breakfast, I do a walk around of the yard, garden, and fruit trees. Hopefully check the rain gauge, but no need today 🙁

Pears

I started on the west side of the yard today where we have 4 pear trees. These are golden spice pears. They are smallish pears but very cold hardy.

Red pears

I go a little overboard on planting only cold hardy trees but better safe than sorry. I paired my golden spice pears with ure pears another cold hardy variety. Both are Pyrus ussuriensis and don't pollinate well with standard pears because of early blooms.

Lots of apples

My Liberty apple tree is producing a nice crop this year. I have a large fence enclosure around it right now. Because I want to harvest these and not feed the deers again this year 🙄

Triplet

This will be my first apple harvest that amounts to anything. I have had a couple of apples from a couple of trees but not a full crop from any tree yet.

Winecrisp apples

My Winecrisp tree has a few apples again. This photo also shows one of my apple growing problems. The yellow spots with brown centers on the leaves are cedar apple rust. Some of my trees are more resistant to the rust (like the Liberty) and it normally doesn't kill the trees. I don't want to treat it chemically so it is something I will probably just live with. I might put some effort reducing cedar trees near my apple trees but thats not really practical with the amount of cedar trees in the local forest.

Beautiful trees with all these fruits... But, I'm disappointed to learn that you do not share with the deers 😃

Thanks. Funny you mention that. We have a neighbor that we have helped pick apples. We used a high reach apple picker pole and harvested everything. I think they were upset lol they like to leave some on the trees for wildlife.

Yep one or two apples for the deer, not too many or they'll get drunk 😀

Planting cold hardy trees is very wise. The borderline trees that had been growing so beautifully in my yard for 12 years were all killed when we got a particularly cold winter. So many people lost beautiful trees. All it took was a week of below normal temperatures.

Thanks for tips 🙂 sorry for your loss. I always take it hard when I lose a tree. I have an apple tree that is struggling right now. I should take it out and plant a new one but its so hard. I will no doubt contine to let it struggle hoping for a turn around. I don't just let it struggle of course, I've done everything I can think of to help it but I will be surprised if it survives too many more seasons.

I've had amazing results with AEA's Pinion on rust so far and it's not chemical, just things like cinnamon oil...

It's a bit pricey, but it has really worked wonders down here this year.
