Apple photos mostly

One

Its been raining in Vermont. I took a few photos of one of my apple trees between the storms.

Cluster

This is a Liberty apple tree planted in November 2021. I plant most of my fruit trees as bare root in the spring but we had just moved in and I was eager to add some fruit trees.

Two

The Liberty apple tree has a reputation as being a low maintenance, early to fruit after planting, and a good producer. This one is definitely healthy and ahead of other trees I planted at the same time.

Apple from tree

I picked an apple with some bug damage because it probably wasn't going to be good if left until September to ripen.

Sample

We brought it in to try at lunch.

Halves

Looks good at least with a good photographer that hid the bug damage lol it was good but sour due to not being ripe.

Chipmunk

Random friendly chipmunk photo.

Beechnuts

We have a couple of English beech trees in the front of our house. I found and tried a couple of the nuts.

Beechnut

I was excited because there are several large American beech trees on the edge of woods. I noticed some beech nuts on them this year. I was mostly excited because it confirmed my ID of the trees as beech which I was not totally confident in. And it gives another resource to forage if I'm aggressive enough to compete with the squirrels 😆 the American beechnuts are different. I'll see if I can find some and share them in a later post.

Growing your own apples is rather thrilling, isn't it?

I had to look it up but found the native American beech grows in eastern Wisconsin but not as far west in the state as I am. English/European beech is used in parks, arboretums, and residential landscapes, but is not native here.

Yes it is!

The English beech was planted ornamentally in front of the house. The American beech are a part of the native forest.

Nice little apples... I hope with the sun they will become sweeter.
I can't wait to see the result of the squirrel nut competition against @steven-patrick 😂
Have a great evening
