The community of The Peñon was founded between 1881 and 1883, but it has experienced its greatest growth over the past three decades, leading to urban development and, consequently, an increase in the number of people living in the area. An interesting fact is that it is located seven kilometers from the city of Cumana and serves as a boundary, since the road to the municipality of Bolívar begins at the toll booth there.
The Peñon began as a fishing village, with modest homes situated along the shores of the Gulf of Cariaco; the main source of income came from the beach bearing the community’s name. Public transportation has also improved significantly; it used to be somewhat difficult to get here, but now it’s very easy since, in addition to the bus line that runs through The Peñon, it’s also easy to stay in Villa Cristobal Colon and walk here, passing through the neighborhood and along the boulevard that runs along the beach.
