I am going to share with you my impressions about the book Anthology of Angolan short stories, a careful selection of authors of African origin, who through their aesthetic proposals reflect the culture of their region. Here we can insert ourselves in stories that use references related to places, gastronomy, traditions and myths of Angola. However, as we go deeper into the stories, we notice that the themes transcend borders, even, many of them transpire so close that they are felt in the skin of today's society.
I am going to select three stories for this review, however, I will make a second part to show other authors that I consider important. The first story is entitled On the curve of time by Isaquiel Cori. It narrates part of the life of Alcides, a young 25 year old artist who does not find an appropriate place to feel at ease, he also confesses he is misunderstood and has problems to socialize. This identity crisis triggers his sexual desire for Elinga, a widow almost twice his age. But then he discovers that even calming his baser passions did not bring peace to his tormented mind. Alcides seeks refuge in his ancestors, in an attempt to understand the forces at work within him.
This search represents the main thread of the story, which is seasoned with the protagonist's inability to externalize his emotions. Words can become an outlet, a liberation of the soul, but those that are silenced can contaminate the heart and mind, harboring unpleasant sensations. That is why hypocrisy is often seen as an option to fit into a community.
For its part, in Hortencia by Jacques Arlindo dos Santos, we plunge into the strangeness of a disturbing text that addresses several taboo subjects: rape, incest and prostitution. The narrator's crudeness can shake the most sensitive reader. José Antonio, Hortencia's uncle, is a perverted and unscrupulous being, capable of harming his own family. As often happens, in many cases, the young woman's life is marked by this dark past and there is no redemption as she looks for a way out and sinks even deeper into a vicious circle.
The naivety and silence of children and adolescents in the face of a crime can be powerful enemies for their mental health, hence the importance of communication, prevention and timely reporting. The subject and the issues raised are shocking, but it is also a reflection of the fact that the baseness is present in any society.
The everyday and identifiable references can also be seen in Lady of the Seven Ages by Dario de Melo. The story introduces us to a woman with obesity who begins to experience the crisis of age and image, she is an outstanding professional, but at 60 years old she is single, her husband was recruited by "a war out there" and she is left to take care of her children, dragging sorrows, complexes, bitterness and dissatisfaction.
The theme can also hurt susceptibilities because the lack of affection is not usually a choice, there have been many people, especially women, who experience depression and anxiety states because of their appearance and when they realize that age begins to take its toll, that they can no longer think of a different future because youth is behind them and will not return. This existential crisis often becomes a heavy mourning that is carried in silence and, in this case, the narrator took advantage of it to build a story that invites us to reflect on what is really significant in the transience of existence.
African and European culture, Angola has Portuguese roots, are manifested throughout the narratives. In several of them there are contrasts between social classes and ethnic groups, as well as between beliefs and ideologies. For this reason, each narrative becomes interesting since very different elements are intermingled, but they fit perfectly to transmit an intentional proposal to the reader, even between the lines it is inferred in some narratives that freedom is not always synonymous with progress.

Voy a seleccionar tres cuentos para esta reseña, sin embargo, realizaré una segunda parte para mostrar a otros autores que considero importantes. El primer relato se titula En la curva del tiempo de Isaquiel Cori. Acá se narra parte de la vida de Alcides, un joven artista de 25 años que no encuentra un lugar apropiado para sentirse a gusto, además se confiesa incomprendido y con problemas para socializar. Esta crisis de identidad funciona como detonante de su deseo sexual por Elinga, una viuda que casi le doblada la edad. Pero luego descubre que ni siquiera calmar sus más bajas pasiones lograban la paz en su mente atormentada. Alcides pretende buscar refugio en sus antepasados, en un intento por entender las fuerzas que operan en su interior.
Esta búsqueda representa el hilo conductor de la historia, el cual se adereza con la incapacidad del protagonista para exteriorizar sus emociones. Las palabras pueden convertirse en desahogo, en liberación del alma, pero las que se callan pueden contaminar el corazón y la mente, refugiando allí sensaciones desagradables. Es por ello que la hipocresía suele ser vista como una opción para encajar en una comunidad.
Por su parte, en Hortencia de Jacques Arlindo dos Santos, nos hundimos en las extrañas de un texto perturbador que aborda varios temas tabú: la violación, el incesto y la prostitución. La crudeza del narrador puede estremecer al lector más sensible. José Antonio, tío de Hortencia, es un ser pervertido y sin escrúpulos, capaz de dañar a su propia familia. Como suele suceder, en muchos casos, la vida de la joven queda marcada por este pasado oscuro y no haya redención ya que buscando una salida lo que hace es hundirse aún más en un círculo vicioso.
La ingenuidad y el silencio de niños y adolescentes ante un delito pueden ser enemigos poderosos para su salud mental, de allí la importancia de la comunicación, la prevención y la denuncia a tiempo. El tema y lo planteado resulta escabroso, pero también es reflejo de que las bajezas se presentan en cualquier sociedad.
Lo cotidiano y las referencias identificables también se pueden apreciar en Señora de las siete edades de Dario de Melo. La historia nos presenta a una mujer con obesidad que comienza a experimentar la crisis de la edad y de la imagen, es una destacada profesional, pero a sus 60 años está soltera, a su marido lo reclutó "una guerra por ahí" y quedó al cuidado de sus hijos, arrastrando penas, complejos, amarguras e insatisfacciones.
El tema también puede herir susceptibilidades porque la carencia afectiva no suele ser una elección, han sido muchas las personas, sobre todo mujeres, que experimentan depresión y estados de ansiedad por la apariencia y al caer en cuenta que la edad les comienza a pasar factura, que ya no pueden pensar en un futuro distinto porque la juventud quedó atrás y no regresará. Esta crisis existencial muchas veces se convierte en un pesado luto que se lleva en silencio y, en este caso, el narrador lo aprovechó para construir una historia que invita a reflexionar sobre lo realmente significativo en la fugacidad del existir.
La cultura africana y la europea, Angola tiene raíces portuguesas, se manifiestan a lo largo de las narraciones. En varias se presentan contrastes entre clases sociales y etnias, también entre creencias e ideologías. Por ello cada narración se vuelve interesante puesto que se entremezclan elementos muy distintos que sin embargo encajan a la perfección para transmitir una propuesta intencionada al lector, inclusive entre líneas se infiere en algunas narraciones que no siempre la libertad es sinónimo de progreso.
