"This girl is driving me nuts, Vera, Vera." Dossie angrily called out to her house help, who was busy washing the dishes in the kitchen, and rushed out to answer her madam.
"Ma, I'm coming, ma", Vera replied as she dashed out of the kitchen, knowing fully when that if she should be called the second time by Dossie, she would be in trouble.
"Why do I have to shout before you answer me?" Dossie shouted immediately as she saw Vera coming from the kitchen. You've known what you did right? That was why you find it very hard to answer me on time", Dossie continued.
"I don't know what you are talking about, ma," Vera replied and quickly kneeled.
"You've stolen my money as usual, what happened to the sum of #20,000 I kept in my wallet? It's just three of us in this house, and I'm sure my daughter can never and will never steal it from you", Dossie snapped.
"I'm paying you so why are you stealing? I should have displaced you from here, but I haven't gotten another helper. That's the privilege you've been enjoying, but I'm sure that won't be for long anymore", Dossie angrily said.
"It will be deducted from your salary; just keep it up, keep stealing my money," Dossie further said.
"Ma, listen to me please, I didn't steal your money. I am not the one behind the missing money", Vera pleaded but she wasn't listened to as Dossie hissed and went to her room.
Later in the evening, Rachel, Dossie's one and only daughter arrived from school. Dossie is a single mother who had single-handedly brought up Rachel after her husband's demise when their child was five years old, and now Rachel is fourteen years old. Rachel entered their compound and saw Vera sweeping the compound, she hissed and headed inside.
"I'm too small, right? You can't see me, that's why you felt too big to greet", Vera said as Rachel was about to open the entrance door.
"And who are you? Why should I greet you? The last time I checked, you are our maid, so keep to that don't feel important", Rachel rudely replied.
"Your mom's money which you took, kindly return it to her. Stop making me pay for your sins", Vera said as she continued with her sweeping.
"How dare you call me a thief? What a gut; what evidence do you have? I don't steal; don't ever accuse me wrongly, or else you will find yourself to blame", Rachel shouted, which attracted her mother, Doss i.e., and caused her to come outside.
"What's the noise about a baby? Why didn't you come in? What's the noise about?", Dossie asked.
"Mom, Vera is accusing me of stealing; she has the guts to call me a thief in my house", Rachel said and began to shed crocodile tears.
"Vera, how dare you? Who do you think you are? Go in baby, leave her to me", Dossie said to Rachel. Rachel hissed and headed inside while her mother followed.
"I know all this will pass; I will find a better job soon," Vera said as she continued with her sweeping.
A few months later, a sum of #100,000 was stolen, and this got on the wrong side of Dossie; without asking Vera about it, she got Vera arrested and detained requesting her to be punished severally till she provided information about the stolen money.
Vera was being punished, but she kept telling the truth about not stealing, but she wasn't believed. After two weeks of punishing Vera, Rachel's conscience was troubling her and she decided to confess to her mother.
"Mom, I want to discuss something with you," Rachel said, trembling.
"What's wrong, baby? What happened to you? Why are you fidgeting?" Dossie asked, feeling concerned.
"I'm sorry, Mom, I didn't mean to do that; I just wanted to punish Vera," Rachel started.
"What are you saying, Rachie? What did you mean?" Dossie asked, feeling more worried.
"I was the one that had been stealing your money all this while. Vera does scold me and talk to me rudely. That's why I decided to always do that to put her in trouble", Rachel explained.
Dossie was surprised to hear this from her fourteen-year-old daughter as she sat speechless, listening to everything she had to say.
"I also took the #100,000 which got Vera locked up. She knew nothing about it; I'm sorry, Mom, I just wanted to punish Vera", Rachel explained.
"What? Rachel! You took a whooping sum of #100,000 to do what? Where is the money? Where is it?", Dossie shouted at Rachel.
"I've spent it, Mom. I bought some clothes and shoes and gave some tokens to my friends in school," Rachel replied, trembling.
"Ha!!! Firstly, let me get Vera out of there", Dossie said as she picked up her phone to call the police in charge of the case, requesting the release of Vera.
After a while, the police drove to Dossie's house to drop Vera, who had been maltreated, and asked her why she wanted the case closed.
"It's nothing, officer; I decided to let her go since she claimed she knew nothing about the missing money.
I forgive her", Dossie replied with a smile.
After pleasantries, the officer left and Vera went in to have her bath and change her clothes. After eating, Dossie pampers Vera in an unusual way which makes Vera suspicious.
"Vera, I wanted to apologize to you for the way I treated you. I should have believed you, but then I'm so sorry for making you go through undeserved punishment. The money has been found and I believe you weren't the one who took it", Dossie said innocently.
"Where and how did you find the money, ma?" Vera asked as she was groaning from the pain felt in her arm.
"Don't worry about that; let me take you to the hospital; you need to be treated", Dossie said as she was about to stand up to go get the car key.
Rachel came out of her room and knelt to apologize to Vera, who was in pain.
"Aunt Vera, I'm so sorry for everything that happened to you. I was behind the missing money I just wanted to get back at you for always scolding me", Rachel said.
"Rachel, I told you not to come out of your room", Dossie snapped.
"Ma, despite knowing it's Rachel, you still want to conceal it instead of punishment", Vera said, disappointed.
"It's fine, Rachel. I knew it was you, but your mom never believed me, but at least you've come out clean. I've forgiven you; just change your ways before it's too late. That's my piece of advice to you, and for scolding you, I'm only doing that because I want the best for you. We scold those we love so that they can become the best version of themselves. You are still young, you have a lot ahead of you, so don't ruin it by stealing. I wish you all the best", Vera said while hugging her.
"Thanks, big sister; let's take you to the hospital, please," Rachel said.
Dossie, who had been watching her daughter in amazement, rushed in to pick up the car key in her room while Vera and Rachel walked to the car outside. Vera was taken to the hospital for treatment, and she recuperated well and fast, and they all lived together happily. Dossie helped Vera to secure a job and she stopped working as the maid but yet still lived with Dossie and Rachel.
