International Tequila Day + Día del Tequila [Eng+Spa]

It's Wednesday, the day in the middle of the week. I read somewhere that there's a joke about this day comparing it to a camel's hump, because it's in the middle of the week. I never really understood the joke, but it caught my attention to find several memes about it today. I'm at home, we've had a bit of unstable internet service this July 24th, I'm a bit worried because it's been getting worse for a few days now. The weather is intermittent with rain. And in other things, I have little to tell about myself, I guess the good thing I can share today is that my brother seems to be getting better from the wound he had, and I wish him to heal well and soon.

As you can see, I have little to comment about myself, so I usually fill out the daily post with comments about some of the day's anniversaries. In this case, I read about a celebration of a Mexican #liquor that is closely linked to their traditions and identity. This liquor has even been included in the list of the World Heritage program of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), which declared it as a Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

Today is Tequila Day.

#Tequila is a liquor distilled from the blue agave plant, or more fully called: Agave Tequilana Weber blue variety. It is a variety of plant that was cultivated by the ancient inhabitants of the current region of Jalisco, since before the arrival of the Europeans in America. The place where this plant was cultivated was called Tequila and that word, in Nahuatl, means “workplace” or “place where it is extracted”, which was referring to the work of the ancient Tequilenses when extracting the juice from the agave.

What is attributed to the European conquerors in this celebration is that they brought to America the distillation process that allowed the traditional liquor made with #agave to reach a new level. So the tequila that we know has its roots in the traditions of the native Mexican peoples, but it managed to unleash its full power with the technological advance of the conquerors. That can be a controversial topic, let's change the focus.

It caught my attention that despite the relevance that Tequila has in many aspects of traditional liquor culture in Mexico, the official celebration is only just turning 18 years old, but this point is understandable when you see that it coincides with the UNESCO proclamation, which was on July 24, 2006. So, although the milestones related to the harvest and planting of Agave were celebrated locally, in addition to having celebrations and Tequila tastings with some frequency, it was necessary to wait until a pronouncement from an international organization to have an International Day of celebration.

Personally, I am not a big drinker. But I am drawn to any celebration that is related to food and associated things (personal smile), and I was told about a recipe for pork belly with tequila and lemon that seemed to be delicious. Just reading about it, my mouth watered.

Es miércoles, el día a mitad de semana. Leí en algún lado que se hace una broma sobre este día comparándolo con la giba de un camello, por estar en la mitad de la semana, en realidad nunca entendí el chiste, pero me llamó la atención encontrarme con varios memes sobre eso el día de hoy. Estoy en casa, hemos tenido un servicio de internet un poco inestable este 24 de julio, me preocupa un tanto porque ha estado poniéndose peor desde hace unos días. El clima está de lluvias intermitentes. Y en otras cosas, tengo poco que contar de mí, supongo que lo bueno que puedo compartir hoy es que mi hermano parece que sigue mejorando de la herida que tenía, y deseo que se cure bien y pronto.

Como vez, tengo poco para comentar sobre mí, así que usualmente suelo completar el post diario con comentarios sobre alguna Efemérides del día. En este caso, leí sobre una celebración de un #licor mexicano que está muy vinculado con sus tradiciones y su identidad. Incluso se ha incluido este licor en el listado del programa Patrimonio Mundial de la Organización de las Naciones Unidas para la Educación, la Ciencia y la Cultura (UNESCO), que lo declaró como Patrimonio Cultural de la Humanidad.

Hoy es el Día del Tequila.

#Tequila es un licor destilado a partir de la planta de agave azul, o llamado de manera más completa: Agave Tequilana Weber variedad azul. Es una variedad de planta que cultivaban los antiguos habitantes de la actual región de Jalisco, desde antes de la llegada de los europeos a América. El lugar en que se cultivaba esta planta se llamaba Tequila y esa palabra, en náhuatl, significa “lugar de trabajo” o “lugar donde se extrae”, lo que estaba haciendo referencia al trabajo de los antiguos tequilenses al extraer el jugo del agave.

Lo que sí se le atribuye en esta celebración a los conquistadores europeos, fue que trajeron a América el proceso de destilación que permitió que el licor tradicional que se elaboraba con agave llegara a un nuevo nivel. Así que el tequila que conocemos hunde sus raíces en las tradiciones en los pueblos nativos mexicanos, pero logró desplegar toda su potencia con el avance tecnológico de los conquistadores. Eso puede ser un tema controvertido, mejor cambiemos el enfoque.

Me llamó la atención, que a pesar de la relevancia que tiene el Tequila en muchos aspectos de la cultura tradicional de licores en México, la celebración oficial está apenas cumpliendo 18 años, pero se entiende tal punto al ver que coincide con la proclama de la UNESCO, que fue el 24 de julio de 2006. Así que, si bien se celebraba localmente los hitos relacionados con la cosecha y siembra del Agave, además de haber celebraciones y catas de Tequilas con algo de frecuencia, había que esperar hasta un pronunciamiento de un organismo internacional para tener un Día Internacional de celebración.

En lo personal, no soy un gran bebedor. Pero me llama la atención cualquier celebración que esté en el tema de la comida y cosas asociadas (sonrisa personal), además de que me contaron de una receta de panceta de cerdo al tequila y limón que parecía estar deliciosa. Tan solo al leer sobre eso, se me hizo agua la boca.
