Traveling by road is the easiest means of transportation for majority of us in Nigeria either through tricycles, motorcycles, buses or taxis. It's affordable compared to Air transportation and I've made quite a large number of car trips since birth.
During childhood, I didn't embark on trips because my Parents didn't allow myself and siblings to travel at all except we are going for family occasion. But as I grow older, I fall in love with traveling by road because of the opportunity to know new places.
But it's now risky to embark on a road trip here in Nigeria because of insecurity, the rate at which bandits attack travellers on the roads is now alarming. So most times, I make my journey very early in the morning so that I will be able to get to my destination on time or at most in the evening if at all where I'm heading to is far.
But there are some journeys that are pleasurable in which I enjoyed myself during the trip while I never pray to experience some trips again in my life because of how horrible and stressful it was.
Sometimes in 2019, a friend of mine was getting married and I was part of her bridal train. The venue of her wedding was Ibadan Oyo state which was about 3hours journey from Ilorin Kwara State where I live.
So a car was arranged by the bride to convey her friends from Ilorin to Ibadan for the occasion in which we paid little amount of money for the fare and that trip with my fellow bridal trains turn out to be the craziest trip I've ever had in my life and I don't wish to experience such again.
We boarded the car around 6am so as to meet up with the church wedding which will start by 10am. As we began the journey, the driver was on a normal speed and I think maybe its because he just began to drive. As we moved outside my state, the speed was becoming unbearable for me and I felt like talking but I kept quiet for a while to see the reactions of others in the car.
Two people spoke at the same time in which I joined them to caution him and he apologized for his overspeeding, we never knew his apologies were for nothing.
But as we are entering Ogbomosho in Oyo state, where there are lots of big trailers on the highway, this driver was just overtaking trailers anyhow like he had an extra life at home and not minding that passengers are in the car.
To our surprise he overtook a trailer wrongly, I felt the trailer was going to hit us and that will be the end of it but luckily he was able to manoeuvre the car. We were all afraid and we screamed at him to park the car and let us get out.
He parked and everyone alighted from the car, we told him we will board public transportation and won't allow him to kill us. This rubbish man started begging and apologizing for driving recklessly, he begged for good 15minutes before we accepted his apologies on the condition that he won't drive above 80km/hr and he agreed. Then we entered the car and he drove with caution till we got to the wedding venue safely.
Anytime I remember this trip, I remember how scared I was and how I almost screamed out my life when the driver wrongly overtook the trailer, it was as if my heart was out of my chest. I don't pray to ever encounter such a reckless driver again in my life.
