ENGLISH VERSION

Hello, fellow travelers, today I'd like to invite you to discover the Alameda de Paula, a promenade very close to the bay, in the very heart of Havana's historic center.

Walking here is like traveling back in time to centuries past. The Alameda de Paula was built in 1777 for the recreation and leisure of the wealthy social class, and was the first tree-lined promenade in Cuba.

Its name "Alameda" comes from the large number of poplar trees planted there to create a green space that would help purify the air. Its location extends from the San Francisco de Paula Church, giving it its name.

It's a beautiful promenade that runs along the port avenue. I truly enjoy the harmony of its design; it has a central path protected on both sides by railings and raised from street level so that there are steps leading to the promenade. Its iron lampposts were restored to give the park its original colonial appearance.

Along one side of the avenue are trees providing shade and cool air. There are stone benches where you can sit facing the sea and watch the port activity.

It's nice to see that the tram lines that used to run through there are still preserved. Seeing the car made me want to take a ride in it and complete the magic of feeling like I'm two centuries ago.

In the center of the avenue, there is a marble column that stands out because it is protected by a fence, as it is considered a monument. It was once a fountain, but only the beautiful central column remains.

This column dates from 1847 and was erected in honor of the Spanish Navy. It has many high reliefs depicting the city's coat of arms, flags, the Spanish crown, weapons, and military trophies. At the top is a sculpture of a lion holding a scroll, signifying the Spanish power of that time. On each of the four sides of the column is a lion's head, water emanating from its mouth and falling onto shells, which are still present.

To my surprise, I came across a life-size sculpture of our poet Nicolás Guillen, who was frequently inspired by the sea from this promenade.

On one side of the Alameda, I was pleased to find two sculptures of beloved Mexican musicians, Agustín Lara and Pedro Vargas. The two are as close as they were in life because they were close friends.

We Cubans strongly identify with Mexican music; these two musicians are beloved in our country, which is why they were placed in one of Havana's main locations to forever honor them.

This promenade is very beautiful. On one side, we enjoy the sea, and on the other, the colonial city with its restored buildings and green parks that beautify and purify the surroundings.

Walking along this promenade means contemplating the sea, the docks, and the boats entering and leaving the bay, all the way, while we enjoy its scent and the breeze that refreshes us on the hottest days.

Buen viaje!

¡Hasta pronto!

The blend of history, nature, and art creates such a harmonious space, a perfect place to pause, reflect, and connect with the soul of the city.

Exactly like this is the Alameda de Paula, a charming place to enjoy at all times. Thank you @gretelarmfeg for your kind words and support 🤗💐
