ENGLISH VERSION

Hello, my dear friends of this Wednesday Walk Community, I am very grateful to be able to share my Wednesday walks as our friend @tattoodjay suggests.

This time, I want to share my walk along one of Havana's oldest streets, a lively place very close to Havana Bay. It is Oficios Street, in the heart of the historic center of Old Havana.

During colonial times, it was a busy street for merchants, travelers, and residents. There were many shops and workshops offering different trades, such as carpentry, blacksmithing, and shoemaking, which gave the street its vibrant color, hence its name.

As I walked down Oficios Street, I admired the beauty of its beautifully restored and preserved colonial buildings. Its narrow cobblestone streets transport me back centuries; it's like a trip back in time.

I came across a small park located on the corner of Muralla Street, which caught my attention because of a very peculiar sculpture. As I approached, I could read that it is dedicated to the German naturalist Juan Cristóbal Gundlach (1810-1896).

It is to him that we owe the discovery and description of the world's smallest bird: the Cuban hummingbird. During his long life in Cuba, he conducted research on Cuban fauna and left behind important writings about his research.

The nearly 3-meter-high sculpture is made of bronze and reinforced concrete slabs. The slabs feature representations of birds, insects, mollusks, and various animals. His face displays a contemplative posture, as he used to when he dedicated his time to identifying and describing the species he found in nature.

In this small park, there is also a large bronze bust of Alexander von Humboldt (1769-1859), also an illustrious German scientist and naturalist who conducted scientific expeditions throughout the Americas and studied our geography, fauna, and flora.
Due to his extensive studies and contributions, he is considered the second discoverer of Cuba.

Furthermore, the park is adorned with a variety of plants paying tribute to these two scientists who left us their research on our biodiversity. Visiting it allows us to appreciate its tranquility and connect with a beautiful history that we cannot forget.

It's a wonderful opportunity to remember two of history's greatest explorers and scientists, while enjoying a welcoming environment surrounded by nature.
