The last hardfork I remember was the split of Steem blockchain where Hive blockchain is born. Then I disconnected, due my confusion, is there another split being brewed or just a version update.

There have been many Hard Forks over time. Outside of the STEEM fork, you may have simply seen them as mere "upgrades". Users don't have to overthink the backend developments.
