I started reading this book three years ago. Finally got the energy to finish it. Book #8 in the Spiral Wars Series, 751 pages. All of the books in this series are like that. Book #9, 658 pgs. Book #10 is being released in July 2025. Msgr. Shepard is pouring out stories the way S. King did back in the day. Incredibly prolific.
Spiral Wars is an epic saga of galactic conflict between human, alien and sentient AI protagonists. Captain Debogande is accused of murder in a government conspiracy. His crew of the starship Phoenix is branded renegade and sets off to clear the name of her falsely accused Captain. Reading the book descriptions will fill you in on the plot. After eight books I'm a little over invested. I started this series in 2019. I took a break at 60% on Book #8 because I was saturated. Msgr. Shepard has built this world that sprawls across vast scales of both time and distance. Alien races and civilizations creating empires and territories of size and power that dwarf human capability. Allies, hosts and enemies all maneuvering for relevance and power. The crew of the Phoenix discover in their quest to uncover a human conspiracy, a vast web of intrigue and mystery 10,000 years in the making. The series appears to be coming to a conclusion and I believe I'll see it through.
Sounds kinda boiler plate for sci-fi space opera but this is a monumental story that is rich in tech, xenomorphs and exploration. Romance, combat, diplomacy and deep thought on the nature of emergent AI. The philosophizing on AI is where I got bogged down. It's definitely a niche taste in sci-fi, but a must read in the genre. On par with The Expanse.
