Care to What Extent

Making everyone's business your business is around the fastest way to a life of misery. There is of course the place for compassion and empathy in all our dealings, but taking and treating the burden of others like our own doesn't help anyone. It neither solves the problem nor makes it lighter to bear.

I took care of my dad during his prolonged battle with stroke. It remains one of my greatest satisfactions till date. Yet I realize that it was so satisfying because I was actually able to do something about it. The tool it placed on all of us financially, mentally, emotionally and physically but it was something that was well within our capacity to intervene.

Now imagine the exact same stress but over something that we have no capacity or control over. There is simply no winning in such a situation. When we worry about things that we can't possibly control, it is similar to daydreaming - only with painful and traumatic memories.

I don't blame people who don't stress over issues beyond their immediate circle. The older I get the more I've come to realise that keeping things simple is a lesser spoken secret to happiness.
