Does 'Al-' , the front part of your family and father's names have any meaning?

It means "the," it's a common part of names in Arabic language but it's not as common in given names which makes my father's case interesting.
Taher (طاهر) by itself means "Purified" or "Clean" but my father name, Al-Taher (الطاهر) means "The Purified."
