Today, back to jazz! After my several months long Japanese jazz series, I have been doing a bit of everything since, but today I have that jazz urge so I'm back to my favorite genre. Let's jump into three grooving ones.

Starting with this classic...

Bobby Timmons - Moanin'

I'm sure most of you have heard this one by the late, great Bobby Timmons. This may be his most well known and has been covered by everyone, but we have to go back to the original and hear how it is done. It falls in the hard bop subgenre but features a bit of the blues and even some soul and gospel influences. Listen through and understand why it remains a favorite of jazz players everywhere.

Lee Morgan - The Sidewinder

Another hard bop trip here. Similar to the above, but different. It was the title track of his 1964 album and it's noted for its catchy, bluesy main riff and funky groove, which helped it cross over into mainstream success, even appearing on the pop charts at the time. If you've never gotten into jazz, listen to this one all the way through and it will change your mind.

Horace Silver - Song for My Father

Staying with hard bop, another classic from that same era. This one is a little more mellow than the previous, but not less good. It has some very distinct bossa nova influenced rhythms, hence the more mellow sound, and some very groovy piano work. Dive in and see what you think.
