Red Notice

in CineTVlast month

I wouldn’t say I randomly remembered this film but scrolling through my bank of movies that Reynolds has featured in, I stumbled on this one and decided to share it today. And not because this film is the best in its field but because of something I thought to point out. It has some incredibly note worthy stars and had a 200 million dollar budget. Netflix claimed it to be the best film of 2021, but I wouldn’t be able to say for sure. Anyway, let’s dive right into it.

Red Notice (2021)

Nolan Booth(Ryan Reynolds) is a wanted art thief. More or less the second best art thief in the world. He steals one of Cleopatra’s eggs on display but then finds John Hartley(Dwayne Johnson) waiting for him in his home. Booth is arrested but not before his biggest rival, the enigmatic “The Bishop”(Gal Gadot) steals said egg and frames Agent Hartley for it, sending both Booth and Hartley in jail.

While in jail, they bond over childhood stories and from there, team up to take down The Bishop, who is strangely always one step ahead. A series of plot twists and revelations come to light with the keynote being that not everything is as it seems.

What I personally thought about this movie was the use of big names. And while that’s good, it could pose a problem sometimes because the actors are too immersed in their actual personalities to give light to the roles they play in the film. So, the whole character thing in this film kind of fizzled out with Dwayne Johnson being the normal batman type, tough, Dwayne Johnson, Ryan Reynolds ever comedic with the witty punchlines being just Ryan Reynolds of Deadpool and Hitman Bodyguard. Even though that too kind of thinned out as the plot got messier. And of course, Gal Gadot being the usual stunning, daring Gal Gadot. So, the entire storyline became about these characters shining in their usual unique way and not about the characters portrayed itself.

When it comes to the chemistry and bromance, Ryan Reynolds and Dwayne Johnson were epic but you could clearly see that they didn’t have the same seamless chemistry as it is with Dwayne and Kevin Hart. And the bonding over the usual absentee, not-so-great fathers was just the normal textbook version. I think this production is one of those that I can say a lot of people watched, so, I wouldn’t like to give out many spoilers. The ending has an insane twist that I didn’t see coming but kind of contradicted the entire experience in my opinion. And of course, gave room for a possible sequel.

All in all, I still find Red Notice incredibly entertaining and it’s the type you enjoy if you don’t take it too seriously. Just stellar acting and a good enough plot. What do you think, have you seen this film before. What are your thoughts?

A fitting review of this Netflix blockbuster! Surprisingly, I've not seen the movie and I'm a fan of these popular actors. I enjoy each of them in their individual roles across different films, but seeing them together in one? The reviews are mixed but I'll reserve judgment until I watch it! 🙂

Looking forward to when you watch it, then. Don't forget to leave a review!😉
