The way I see work and life changed completely when I learned this new piece of information that I'm about to share with you.
Let everything you do be for the good of everyone involved, that was the advice a mentor once gave me. I didn't fully get it the first time he told me that.
The whole time, I saw business success as a matter of winning deals, climbing corporate ladders and making the most profits out of anything you do. It took a while but I finally saw truth and meaning in what the mentor had said.
Doing good looks like kind gestures and make you feel moral but it's way more than that. It's actually smart business to do good.
Not everyone though but a lot of people choose to support companies that show care to the economy, community or customers. They would rather choose to purchase an item from a brand that gives back or respects the planet by going green or avoiding things that'll destroy nature resources than one that only talks about profit and making more money.
There's statistical proof that the companies that do the right things or merely give back, do better financially than the companies that don't.
What builds strong business? It's trust. And what builds trust? It's doing good consistently. So doing good in a way, builds a strong business. The simple actions of generosity matters so much to the company you want to build. Let's say a coffee shop decides to offer a discount if a customer brings their own cup. That move helps all parties involved. It helps the shop, helps the customers and helps the planet since there'll be less disposable cups in the trash. I believe that's what businesses should aim for, decisions where nobody loses.
The company I work in have adopted this strategy. We've cut down on plastics, helped plant some trees and even supported some employees in their own lives which is not connected to the company. However, since we've helped the employees, they feel the need to be good to the company. It's not always going to work out perfect because ingratitude exists.
Helping to clean the beaches and even mental health you name it, we've done it. It's not for applause or just to look good but because it feels right to do and most importantly, a team that is happy does great work.
Doing stuff like this would look like more effort in the beginning but caring about people and the planet pays off in ways money alone can’t. I believe that’s the kind of success worth building.
