I think it is definitely possible, but if he needed easy access to it in the future I wonder how hidden it might actually be. I wouldn't expect it to be buried in some obscure way lost to time. Maybe just thrown in a cave somewhere or something. What do I know though!
You make several good points! I tend to think it is more fantasy created by people who knew he as a bigshot, so he must have money somewhere! But never know, I suppose. If I lived closer, I might join some of the treasure hunting clubs, because why not try, eh?
Yeah, I think that would be cool. I was all about heading out west to search for Forrest Fenn's treasure when that was a thing.
