First of all, this is not a review based on a re-watch, this is genuinely the first time I have seen this movie. No, I've not been living under a rock. I just haven’t had the time to watch it. And you may ask seriously? Yes. But, the most important thing is that I've seen it now and I must say what a sad movie.

The Fault in Our Stars, for those who haven’t seen it (which I highly doubt), is NOT a happy-ever-after story. It is about a teenage girl named Hazel Grace Lancaster who has been battling cancer, meets a boy, Augustus Waters who also had cancer that made him lose one leg. They meet at a support group and just like that, cue boy falls in love with girl at first sight (side eye).

They bond over their love for a particular book and start a journey to finding the author but in hindsight, it was actually their journey to falling head over heels for each other only for the boy to die a painful death and leave the girl alone, really cementing the ideology of "it is better to have loved and lost than not to have loved at all".

Okay, so top of the list, I hated that author, Van Houten? That your daughter died of cancer is not a pass to be a mean person, especially to these kids who through sickness and pain sought you out because they loved your book and are just trying to live a little before they inevitably die.

Next is this guy Augustus, yea the boy who falls in love. How dare you make Hazel Grace fall in love with you. I mean this girl was just thriving every day minding her business and waiting for her time to be up but you had to come and sweep her off her feet, and show her what she didn’t ever think she could ever get to experience, only to get sick and die, not cool.

And then there’s sweet, beautiful, witty, smart Hazel Grace, who is such a fighter. I am so happy she got to experience teenage love.

Watching this film in 2024 made me realize a lot has changed in dating and romance. Like Gus with the flowers, and long calls and texts and hanging out with no ulterior motives( I mean bro arranged a trip for them to go to Amsterdam and meet that crazy author, and he was sick). Just the innocence and purest of intentions and affection, it's not so evident in this day and age and I kinda envy their love(shrugs).

Anyway, I enjoyed the movie. Would I watch it again? probably not, but it was definitely refreshing. Also, do you think it's better to have loved and lost than not to love at all? Let me know what you all think.
