I haven't discovered a worker who doesn't like holidays. A few days just to rest a bit before we continue the work again, is very important. That is the reason some people don't joke with their weekends. They feel it it the only time they have to rest after the weeks busy schedules.
Some organizations make it worse by not allowing their employees to go on leave or even take a break. My cousin got a job recently as a baker in a new eatery. She resume 7:00am and close by 9:00pm everyday, including Saturdays and Sundays. I asked why it is that stressful, but she said it is because it's a new place and they don't have enough staff yet.
To me, that's just too much. When somebody works for that long hours every day, the person may break down. I think employers are just too greedy. They don't care about the wellbeing of their staff and they feel they could always get another person to do the job because people are desperately in need of jobs.
For me as a worker, the days or moments in life that I feel deserve more free days is the maternity leave. This is something that has really affected my life. I almost died because of something as overlooked as adequate rest.
I think after a woman gives birth, she should be given adequate time to recuperate before resuming back to work. I don't know how scientifically right this is, but I heard that after a woman gives birth, it takes the body three years to recover all the blood and other things lost during pregnancy and childbirth.
If the above is true, why then will you ask a woman that gave birth to resume work six weeks after giving birth? That is pure wickedness if you ask me. The journey of pregnancy to childbirth is not a small thing. It is a journey of life and death. It is very deep.
After I gave birth to my Son, I was to resume six weeks after. It didn't mean much to me then, because I felt I was strong. I and the baby were doing fine. so, I resumed after six weeks. Few weeks later I fell sick. It was so critical. I did series of tests I was treated but I wasn't feeling any better.
They had to run other tests like HIV and it was negative. It took sometime before I was able to get up on my own without support. I became a shadow of myself. I couldn't eat or do anything. I was scared for my life. But at least, I recovered after some weeks. That was when I realized that I had endangered my life. I didn't allow my body to heal properly before going back to stress it, just because I didn't want to be replaced.
I understand that government workers get a six months leave after childbirth but private firms find it difficult to give their staff three months maternity leave.
I'm of the opinion that every woman get a six to nine months maternity leave just to heal and be fit to go through rigorous work again.
These are the days I feel would make more sense if I didn't have to spend them at work and be worried that my baby may be crying.
Thanks for stopping by, I really appreciate you.
