Delivery Riders Hub: Thoughtful and Timely

This is genius.

When I first saw this shed a few months ago, I said, "This is a genius and a very considerate initiative by the government." I have not been to many places, and there is nothing I can directly compare this to but this is a really commendable project and should also be introduced in many places, given the rise of delivery services with the rise of e-commerce and online food ordering.

This initiative by the Abu Dhabi government through the Department of Municipalities and Transport certainly provides relief to the delivery riders, particularly in the scorching summer months when they have to endure very harsh weather conditions. It was developed in collaboration with government entities, private sector, and non-profit organizations with the goal of improving the working conditions of these delivery riders.

Amenities

This initiative launched in September 2023 and I think this area in Mamoura is the pilot since there are many accessible restaurants and cafes here.

There are designated parking spaces for the motorcycles, so they do not have to park in pedestrian walkways or other spaces where they could potentially get fined for disrupting/obstructing pedestrian flow.

The covered shed is spacious enough to accommodate 10 to 15 riders comfortably, providing them a place to rest and pass the time while waiting for their next orders. Although it would have been even nicer if the shed were air-conditioned, especially during the summer, the shade and space alone offer significant respite for these riders. I believe the initial plan included air conditioning, and I hope it will be reintroduced soon.

The wooden design of the hub gives a natural and aesthetic appeal to it, no doubt, and the lively, colorful accents make it more appealing to the eyes. The use of wooden slats allows for better air circulation while providing ample shade, making it a practical and eco-friendly choice.

Thoughtful

Having observed the hub and its use over the past few months, I can say that the Riders Hub truly makes a difference. I see riders sit here each time I pass by, the reason I do not have photos from inside of it. It's not my space, and I do not want to intrude on theirs.

I read that this project is a product of consultation with the delivery riders. They asked, they received feedback, and they listened. It just goes to show that the government understands, and is committed to improving the predicament of these riders.

Timely

This Delivery Riders Hub is a timely initiative, as I said, since there are so many of them these days, and this industry keeps on growing. They are essential workers and it is just right that they are given a supportive and comfortable working environment.

Hopefully, this will serve as a model for other cities and communities seeking to support the delivery workforce. This is an example that if the organizations concerned know how to listen and are considerate to their stakeholders, they can make a significant difference to improving the quality of their work life.

How about you, do you have an initiative like this where you live?

We have something similar like that but it's mostly from the company itself. They provide charging stations as well as place for them to do their bike monthly check-up.It's always nice to read when the govt truly cares for its people especially the blue collar workers and the freelancers like them.

If only the government would be more sensitive to the needs of its people... so many lives would be changed.

Greetings @arrliin, a beautiful job that provides rest and protection to users, the sun is usually harsh in the summer and these spaces are perfect for protection, I hope that they will have air conditioning in the near future.

I love the wooden design because of its beautiful color that contrasts very well with the buildings of the city.

Have a nice day!

I agree. The contrast is beautiful.

Hopefully there will be more of these hubs around here, and in many more cities around the world.

I wish more cities would adopt initiatives like this. It really shows how much impact thoughtful urban planning can have on essential workers' lives

Facilities that not only help people, but make people comfortable and visually look very attractive.

This is such a good initiative!! Since the pandemic, the amount of delivery services increased greatly here in Venezuela and now you see them everywhere, parked waiting for new orders, occupying part of the sidewalk (here I'd say none cares about it and it is not respected).

They need their own space as well and even though it could be expensive here it could really change lives and improve the work experience

It truly is! Hope there will be more of these everywhere else. A space for riders like this should be normalized.

Here we can still see lots of them just sitting under the trees while waiting for their next ride, but truly, this initiative is a great start.

I think the wooden design is unique. provides plenty of air circulation

Yes, but here airconditioning is really, I'd say, required because the heat could really go over the top.
