I recently discovered the “Trips” feature on the Airbnb app, which shows all the places I’ve stayed through the platform. Honestly, I barely remember most of the places I’ve stayed at, but looking through the photos I took brought back so many memories. So, I thought, why not share my very first Airbnb experience?
Before arriving in the U.S., I had no idea that a service like Airbnb even existed. I always thought that living abroad meant either renting an apartment after arriving or staying in a hotel. Later on, six of my friends and I decided to take a short trip to New York City during our vacation. Since we all lived in different states, someone suggested renting an Airbnb for convenience, and that’s how I was introduced to Airbnb.
One friend volunteered to book the place under their account, and we all agreed to split the cost afterward. We were so focused on planning our NYC itinerary that we didn’t put much effort into choosing the Airbnb. As soon as we found a three-bedroom, three-bathroom apartment in a convenient location with easy access to transportation, we immediately paid the deposit without overthinking it!
It turned out that our randomly chosen apartment was actually a great find. Located in Manhattan, it was within walking distance of the 1 train (1 Broadway–Seventh Avenue Local), making it super easy to get to Times Square, Wall Street, and other attractions. The apartment also had a garden room and back yard, complete with outdoor furniture and a BBQ grill. Plus, it offered a fully equipped kitchen with cookware and utensils for guests to use.
Since we were out sightseeing almost every day, we barely used the kitchen, and the garden ended up being just a cute spot for photos. But for long-term travelers, this place would probably be perfect.
Besides the typical amenities you’d find in a hotel, like toiletries and towels, the apartment also had a washer, dryer, Wi-Fi, and even allowed pets. Even though we picked this place so casually, it really had everything we needed, leaving me with a great first impression of Airbnb.
One major highlight of this apartment was how clean it was. Each of the three bedrooms had its own unique style—some cozy, some with dorm-like vibes—and the living room was a great spot for breakfast or late-night chats. The only downside was that it was actually located in the Bronx, which we didn’t realize until a few days into our stay. The area wasn’t the safest, but since we were a mixed group of friends, walking around together still felt relatively secure.
All in all, if you’re traveling alone, safety is definitely something to consider when booking an Airbnb. But if you’re traveling with family or a group of friends, Airbnb is an amazing option. Not only is it often much cheaper than a hotel, but the memories made while hanging out together are truly priceless.
