Finished. Definitely different to how I think of Stephen kings work, but I still enjoyed it and was driven to find out the ending
ok so I liked this, I wanted to find out what happens but with this being more of a crime thriller, some things were just a bit weird or implausible. Starting with the bad.
First off, Jerome’s weird jokey talk was cringe and felt a bit stereotypical/ racist… it also felt the author had to remind me 500 times that Jerome was black. Weird. It’s 2009. Not 1950.
Hodges and Janeys relationship was also strange. Don’t get me started on their after sex talk. Or during sex talk. Lol. Yuck.
Then Holly & Jerome … being the one’s trusted to get the bad guy and do all this investigative work was odd too. It also felt like Holly just kinda came out of no where and then was dragged along on this ultra dangerous gig. I just didn’t really care for her character and was a bit disappointed in the ending, but also it’s nice Brady didn’t get his way, and didn’t die.
Ok so now the good.
Kings writing just hooks me. I was morbidly curious the whole book. I was grimacing at the descriptions of Brady and his mum. Brady’s hateful thoughts. I was on the edge of my seat needing to know what’s happening next. The final scene as well (before Holly wrecks him lol) I didn’t know which way it will go, will he blow up the place or not. THANK GOD ODDELL IS OK THO. That part was so well done and I was scared (def animal bias here tho)
I think I’d give this a 3.75/5 , but I’ll take a bit to let it sink in and see if I update it.
Oh forgot to add I also find it SO STRANGE and unsettling and confusing that Holly drives the Mercedes that killed 8 people and was covered in gore and sees nothing wrong with it. I know she’s mentally ill but still…
Then it gets worse and Hodges and Jerome are ok with it too. Then she still has it at the end of the book like why would you want to keep that car? Idc how many paint jobs and refurbishments you do. No thanks !
