A Double-Edged Sword

Over the years, technological advancements have taken a big step forward, changing the way we live, work, and socialize with one another. The rapid development of machines, gadgets, and services has transformed our lives, making living convenient. As we all know that there are pros and cons to everything, and technological advancements are no exception. When it comes to technology, the debate that has been going on for years is whether the benefits of technological progress outweigh the disadvantages.

It is interesting to think about how our forefathers lived. They lived, worked, and socialized with one another without the technological advancements we enjoy today. There were no research engines, cell phones, cars, planes, and other things, but they still built meaningful connections among themselves. This makes me wonder if our forefathers lived better days.

Two years ago, technology brought Artificial Intelligence to our doorsteps, wowing us with its capabilities. I remember the first time I got to know about Chat Gpt. It was in late 2022. My memories of that period are flawed, but I think it was around December. I was struggling to solve a particular assignment that one of my lectures gave us. The assignment question was on a novel- Death and the King’s Horseman by Wole Soyinka. Frustrated, I came on Discord to rant. Luckily, Olujay was there at that time. He told me about chat GPT, which I had never heard before. My curiosity kicked in and I clicked on the link. I inputted the assignment questions, and to my surprise, I got answers that impressed me.

Since its emergence, AI has been a hot topic. The talk of the town, with debates questioning and supporting its importance in society. Is Ai the magic wand that human needs to push them to the next level or is it a threat to humanity? While some people believe that AI will solve the world’s problems when it comes to academics, art, medical fields, and other sectors, others fear that it will lead to our destruction.

As a university student, I must admit that I had helped me in so many ways. In my university, some of our lecturers don’t take their job seriously. Better put, they don’t take it seriously enough to teach students well. Instead of taking their time to explain complex topics, they send us PDFs for us to read and understand on our own. Thus, making learning overwhelming and difficult. Thanks to AI, I've been able to break down complex topics into understandable ones. Last semester, the most challenging course I took was Discourse Analysis and Pragmatics, a very complex course that I wish not to ever come across again in my life. The lecturer sent us numerous PDFs so we could read on our own. The PDFs were so complex, that they were difficult to read and understand. Thanks to AI, I was able to break down the topics into understandable pieces.

Having established the importance of AI, I think one of the reasons why people think that AI is a threat to humanity is because it has the potential to replace humans in many jobs, leading to unemployment. AI has advanced to the level where it can carry out tasks such as marking scripts, writing, and even diagnosing diseases. When it comes to academics, one of the downsides of AI is that it can make students less original and creative.

Thanks for reading.
