Abstract art can be so hard.

I wouldn't say so, because abstract art is up to interpretation and you see what you see, it doesn't have to be the same as what the artist meant. That's the beauty of it. At least that's how I see it.

I usually like to look at an abstract painting and then just go with my first impression.

That's what I do as well and it's the right thing I believe. Obviously if you're not alone, it gets even more interesting, because you can discuss it, in case the other party has a different opinion. It's a fun game :)
