An Early Morning Rise

It was 05:00 AM sharp— an hour and a half earlier than my normal rising time.
The surroundings were as dead as my laptop battery, but the crisp morning air with water droplets on the grass prompted me to do some stretches.

These stretches activated my muscles to take on my early morning chores before the day's cruise.

We set off at the perfect time and were joined by another boater who shared the operation of the locks. I like it when this happens because we conserve water. As we reduce unnecessary filling and emptying of water from locks, having another boater also speeds up the lock operation process and eases the pressure on each lock operator.

On this occasion, one of the lads was new to operating the locks, so I was able to take him under my wings, he quickly got the hang of it and even assisted me in opening a stubborn, rusty paddle.

2.jpg

We felt enveloped by the nature around us, and we were all mesmerised by it.
When we think of stunningly beautiful islands, the UK is not foremost on our minds, but the UK countryside offers undeniable tranquillity.

3.jpg

It's June, but the sun disappeared and rain clouds loomed. I was touched to hear the guy (Simon) who I was opening the locks with say, "It's liquid sunshine."

I asked him where he'd learned that term from, because it's a common saying that we have in Jamaica, and he said, "I said it from my heart. That's what I feel."
I smiled.

4.jpg

A feeling of charm took over me when Simon said,

"I bet you never thought, as a little girl in Jamaica, that you would be on a narrowboat in the beautiful countryside of England."

5.jpg

As I go along the canals, I reflect on the tropical islands where I've lived. The greenery here reminds me that nature is beautiful everywhere, just different, and I get the chance to feel truly immersed in nature here, something that is sometimes inhibited in other places.

8.jpgA Lock Cottage

There's usually a cottage at the top or bottom of a lock, with private occupants who are not affiliated with the Canal Network. In this one, there was a lovely elderly couple who came out to chat with us.
It must be great to live by the canals and watch dozens of boaters go by daily. That in itself would be entertainment for me.

7.jpg

A herd of cows came to hydrate by the lock and lingered for a while. Cows are inquisitive animals, so I was not surprised to see them observing.

7.jpg

It had been 7 hours of cruising with over a dozen locks, I was exhausted. We pulled over and moored up for another day, in a village called Kintbury, right by The Dundas Arms Pub.
The weather forecast promises a sunny Sunday, so it should be a great day to chug along to enjoy the last of the weekend.

I wish you all a slow and easy day:)

I could picture you retiring to live in one of these lock huts someday; it really would be lovely to meet so many new people everyday!

The trip looks lovely, it's so cool to see you on the move! 😍 Simon sounds like excellent company for a slow living day, it was nice to read about some of your exchange with him. 🤗

Hmmm, we never thought about living in one of the Lock houses ourselves, because we are so in love with being on a boat. However, now that you mention it, I'm picturing hubby sitting close to the canal to chat with every boater who passes, and not do anything else all day 😂 I shall not entertain that idea at all. 🤣

Yeah, Simon was a cool guy. He kept forgetting his routine for opening the locks, and he explained that he's just a relaxed guy who loves being in nature (and he mentioned that he had a hangover).
Simon was happy that we were understanding and he gave us 2 beers when he had enough for the day, but we carried on for another 2 hours though:)

This was a nice post to be read during my midday coffee!.... Thanks for this... ‘Liquid sunshine’... That's a new one for me! ;)...

Thanks, I'm pleased you like it. I guess it's like liquid sunshine in Venezuela too. So you can use it the next time you hear someone complaining about the rain:)))

Over a dozen locks in 7 hours...? 😮 I hope that is an exceptional number in that area, and not the norm!

Hehe. In some stretches, there are many locks. I was a little dehydrated and grumpy at the end of the day.
Today was sunny, so I made sure to drink lots of fluid, and there were only about 7 locks.
Enjoy the rest of the day:)))

Your post did answer one of my unspoken questions -- now I know where do you do your physical exercises :P

Hehe! I'm happy to be on the move again because sometimes we moor where I will be able to do yoga on the footpath. It's always a bonus when we move close to a park so I can exercise there.
In the meantime, it's a balancing act on the boat.
Happy Sunday!

Me falling over twice just looking at the pictures xD Impressed at your balance on a boat.

Haha! The boat is way more steady on the cut, than it was on the marina.
Enjoy the rest of the weekend:)))

Good morning dear friend @millycf1976
You live in a true natural paradise, surrounded by dense nature, how great that you have had another person collaborating with the locks
How great the way Simon has of seeing rain clouds. I loved that he called it "It's liquid sunlight." I didn't know it was a Jamaican terminology.
I also think it must be great to live near water canals.
Have a happy and prosperous week

Hello @jlufer

a true natural paradise

You said that so well. It is indeed. What makes it more special is that every other boater that I encounter has the same remark about how blissful it is on the canals.

Yes, in Jamaica, it's a daily heavy downpour of liquid sunshine, No wonder the island is so lush.

Have a love day ahead too, and thanks for the well wishes:)

Not the laptop battery 😂😂. That was funny. It is nice to stretch the muscles.

It is great to have another boat around.. to be honest, I don’t really understand the lock part or perhaps I am not familiar with it, but I guess it is something in the boat.

The surrounding looks so nice, perfect green. I love it.

Great knowing you are from Jamaica too.

Wish you a nice cruise.

The Canal Locks is physics in action. Since the canals are man-made, locks— is how boaters travel along the canals to climb hills or descend, just as you would in a car. So, there is a deep chamber with gates at each end. On the gates are paddles that open or close to keep water in or out.

👆 so if a boat is travelling in the water and needs to get into that empty chamber, I (the lock operator) would open paddles, (which restrict water when closed), to fill up the chamber. When the water in the chamber is at the exact height as the water in the canal, where the boat is, then the gates will be able to open, allowing the boat to drive right in, since they are on the same level. And there is a repeat of that on the other side, to lower and empty the chamber that the boat is in so that the water level will be the same height as the water in the canal on the other end.

It's difficult for me to video it because I am in action and need to focus (to not fall in the canal while in the process), but in a few days time. I should be entering at a section where there are volunteers, so I should be able to video the process.

It's phenomenal how it all works:)

I am looking at it as an elevator…

the water level rises and so it can be on the same level as the normal water level which you are currently on, this would give the boat a smooth ride into the chamber.

Oh. That would be great. It is quite interesting to me.

Thanks for explaining

Yes, you got it right. It's amazing to see it in action, especially knowing that it's actually my home that is moving:)

Thanks to you.

I am sure it would be nice in action.

You should make your journey a series 😊

Yes, we try to blog about it as much as possible and videos too:)

Oh.. I see. I prolly haven’t been following

I also think it must be an experience to live in a place like that, I imagine those old people must have a very happy retirement there... Well, I loved the sky, and I see it didn't rain while t traverse, which enhances the whole experience (or so it seems). It's impossible that a place with so much green and a cool day doesn't motivate us to adventure, I'm happy for you Milly! 😘

Hey there!
Thank you 😊
You're right. Seeing all this nature is inspiring as it helps to rejuvenate my mind:)

You did great yoga pose in the boat. Big applause

Thank you for sharing some view there. Have a great day

Thanks 😊.
I'm glad that you liked it. It was actually Qigong, not yoga:)
