I recently finished reading Anthology of Angolan short stories, a compilation of thirty-nine narrators. I chose three stories as a small significant sample, the first one is entitled Marquita is having an affair by Joao Tala. It is a story that explores themes such as sexual freedom, morality, desire and love, and where a social critique can be appreciated. The protagonist of the story is Marquita, a woman known for her promiscuity, she is an expert in the art of seduction, thus captivating all the men in town, regardless of their marital status.
Mariquita's heart is charmed by a military man, at this point the story takes a turn and she changes her behavior, reserving her nights and early mornings for her new lover. Here we can observe a new level of emotional complexity in the story, which becomes more acute with the pregnancy of the protagonist and the subsequent birth of the baby. The curious thing is that this little boy seems to have traits of all the men who enjoyed Marquita's sweetness, giving an ironic and humorous touch to the story.
On the other hand, in Letter to her ten, Marta Santos, its author, immerses us in a story full of mischief, lies, betrayal and disillusionment. The plot focuses on Mario Kindomba, a man known to have a facility with the written and spoken word, by virtue of which his cousin asks him to write a letter to a girl in which he declares his love for her.
Mario, after meeting the girl, also falls in love, so he chooses to sign the letter with his name, taking advantage of his cousin's illiteracy. The satirical aspect is accentuated when the cousin himself is the one who delivers the letter and the relationship becomes a reality. Here we can appreciate the manipulation, where cunning is the value that is accentuated to achieve personal goals.
The other story is entitled The Raft Goes Far by Ondjaki, a story where the desire to sail the open waters is materialized through an invention called "balsicleta", a kind of innovative boat with which the protagonist intends to travel other coasts beyond his village.
Here the narrative emphasizes the importance of imagination and creativity when setting a very daring goal. The message about perseverance and discipline to achieve dreams is evident. It also highlights the adventurous spirit that led the conquistadors to unknown lands.
Immersing myself in this anthology was a delight for my senses, each text made me explore diverse narrative universes to appreciate another culture and learn about gastronomy, history, customs and religion. The particular vision of the world stands out immediately, the context that is offered to the reader is typical of a nation parked in time, in a space where freedom still remains chained to slavery and where modernity passed by and no one clung to it.

Acá la narrativa acentúa la importancia de la imaginación y la creatividad a la hora de establecer un objetivo muy osado. Es evidente el mensaje sobre la constancia y la disciplina para alcanzar los sueños. También se resalta el espíritu aventurero, ese que llevó a los conquistadores hacia tierras desconocidas.
Sumergirme en esta antología fue un deleite para mis sentidos, cada texto me hizo explorar diversos universos narrativos para apreciar otra cultura y conocer de cerca la gastronomía, historia, costumbres y religión. La particular visión del mundo resalta de inmediato, el contexto que se le ofrece al lector es propio de una nación estacionada en el tiempo, en un espacio donde la libertad aún permanece encadenada a la esclavitud y donde la modernidad pasó por un lado y nadie se aferró a ella.
