Today, I bring you a work by Gina Picart, a Cuban writer, journalist, and researcher. Her work is characterized by an imaginary world that blends myth and evocation. Her narrative is a mixture of various cultural traditions and religions. This book captivated me from its very first paragraphs with its mystical aura, so reminiscent of García Márquez's magical realism.

Hoy les traigo una propuesta de Gina Picart, escritora, periodista e investigadora cubana. Su trabajo se caracteriza por un mundo imaginario que mezcla mito y evocación. Su narrativa es una mezcla de varias tradiciones culturales y religiones. Esta lectura me atrapó desde sus primeros párrafos por su halo místico tan parecido al realismo mágico de García Márquez.

Things like a thirteen-year-old boy flying kites, with complete naturalness, among the tombs of a cemetery and trading dead people's bones are among the most macabre details that caught my attention. On the second page, we can read the following:

"...In his eagerness to win Gilbertico's acceptance, Pedro allowed the boy to do abominable 'little things,' such as collecting phalanges from skeletons belonging to the mass grave to make necklaces that were very fashionable among groups of rocker youth..."

"...Pedro and Gilberto had found a way to profit from human remains... Gilbertico, in addition to the necklaces, made pendants and bracelets that he sold at his school..."

Cosas como que un niño de trece años empinara papalotes, con toda naturalidad, entre las tumbas de un cementerio y comercializara huesos de muertos, son de las más macabras que llamaron mi atención. En la segunda página se puede leer lo siguiente:

"...En su afán por ganarse la aceptación de Gilbertico, Pedro le permitía al muchacho "cositas" abominables, tales como recolectar falanges de esqueletos pertenecientes a la fosa común, para confeccionar collarines muy de moda entre los grupos de jóvenes roqueros..."

"...Pedro y Gilberto o habían hallado el modo de sacar provecho a los restos humanos ... Gilbertico, además de los collares, fabricaba colgantes y pulseras que vendía en su escuela..."

This novel is a fascinating story of love and death set in mystical places in Havana, such as the Colón Cemetery and the solar of Las Margaritas, famous for being closely linked to the great Celia Cruz. The plot revolves around the cold and unempathetic manipulation of people who do not care about the suffering of their chosen victim.

Esta novela es una fascinante historia de amor y muerte ambientada en lugares místicos de La Habana, como el Cementerio de Colón y el solar de las Margaritas, famoso por estar muy ligado a la gran Celia Cruz. La trama gira en torno a la manipulación fría y poco solidaria de personas a las que no les importa el sufrimiento de su víctima elegida.

"The Dark Fish's Journey" tells, in the third person, the life and adventures of Renata Casal, a thirty-something woman with a degree in Art History from the University of Havana, who works as a museologist in a cemetery. But this is no ordinary cemetery—it is the Colón Cemetery, the largest, most famous, and most visited in Cuba, a giant mausoleum where many notable figures rest.

"El viaje del pez oscuro"nos cuenta, en tercera persona, la vida y las peripecias de Renata Casal, una mujer treintañera graduada de Historia del Arte en la Universidad de la Habana, que trabaja como Museóloga en un cementerio, pero no es cualquier cementerio, es el cementerio de Colón, el más grande, conocido y visitado de Cuba, sitio que es un mausoleo gigante donde reposan muchas personalidades.

The plot intertwines real and enigmatic elements and events from the city and Havana's life, including the inexplicable disappearance of the great organ of the Havana Cathedral, the death of the Rosicrucians, and others. It is a literary work that speaks of Cuban ingenuity for survival against certain foreign individuals willing to do anything to achieve their goals.

La trama entrelaza elementos y sucesos reales y enigmáticos de la ciudad y la vida habanera, incluyendo la inexplicable desaparición del gran órgano de la Catedral de La Habana, la muerte de los Rosacruces y otras. Es una obra literaria que habla del ingenio cubano para la supervivencia contra ciertos sujetos extranjeros dispuestos a hacer cualquier cosa para lograr sus objetivos.

The novel is deeply rooted in the daily reality of Cuba. It also delves into secret cults, which I had no idea existed, such as one carried out in a house in Miramar based on elements of the ceremonial practices of the Golden Dawn. The title of this novel is a great metaphor, rich in symbolism. The "journey" is a representation of a search, while the "fish" is a symbol of purity and of Christ for early Christians. However, the word "dark," which is an adjective, changes the meaning of the "journey" to one of a mystical and perverse nature.

La novela está profundamente arraigada en la realidad cotidiana de Cuba. También profundiza en cultos secretos, de los que yo ni tenía idea que existieran, como uno realizado en una casa en Miramar basado en elementos del ceremonial de la Golden Dawn o Orden del Amanecer Dorado. El título de esta novela es una gran metáfora, rico en simbolismos. El "viaje" es un una representación de una búsqueda, mientras que el "pez" es un símbolo de pureza y de Cristo para los primeros cristianos. Sin embargo, la palabra oscuro, que además es un adjetivo, cambia el sentido del "viaje"a una naturaleza mística y de perversión.

As a curious fact, I’ll tell you that, according to the author, the story emerged from a simple visit to the Colón Cemetery, prompted by a detective-like and obsessive search for the ghost of Catalina Lasa, a Cuban aristocrat with a life worthy of being told. So, I encourage you to look into it. This is one of the books that I borrowed and haven’t returned, not because I didn’t want to, but because no one asked for it back. It turns out that the person who lent it to me seems not to want it back, saying that reading it gave them chills and bad omens.

Como dato curioso les cuento que según las palabras de la autora, la historia surgió de una simple visita al Cementerio de Colón, provocada por una búsqueda detectivesca y obsesiva del fantasma de Catalina Lasa, una aristócrata cubana con una vida digna de que la conozcan, así que los animo a investigar. Este es uno de los libros que me han prestado y no he devuelto, no porque no halla querido, sino porque no me lo han pedido. Sucede, que la persona que me lo prestó parece que no lo quiere de vuelta, dice que al leerlo sintió escalofríos y malos presagios.

"The Dark Fish's Journey" is a novel that goes beyond a simple story. It is an in-depth investigation into emotional and psychological manipulation, the vulnerability of women, and the mystical currents of Cuban culture. Although this book is currently hard to find, as it was published by a U.S. publisher, it is a significant work in Gina Picart's bibliography. This is a work of fiction but with a lot of reality—the places and characters are real. It is not a read for just any reader, which is why I do not recommend it to overly sensitive or scrupulous readers.

"El viaje del pez oscuro" es una novela que va más allá de una simple historia. Es una investigación profunda sobre la manipulación emocional y sicológica, la vulnerabilidad de las mujeres y las corrientes místicas de la cultura cubana. Aunque actualmente es difícil de encontrar este libro ya que fue publicado una editorial de Estados Unidos, es una obra significativa en la bibliografía de Gina Picart. Esta es una obra de ficción pero con mucha realidad, los sitios y personajes son reales. No es una lectura para cualquier lector, por esa razón no la recomiendo la lectores demasiado sensibles y escrupulosos.
