Hello, book-loving community! Today I bring you this recommendation of a book that, of all the books by this great author, is the one I liked the most. Not only is it a novel but it carries references to the history of Haiti in the 18th century and one learns a lot from reading it.
¡Hola, comunidad amante de los libros! Hoy les traigo esta recomendación de un libro que, de todos los de esta gran autora, es el que más me gustó. No solamente es una novela sino que lleva referencias a la historia de Haití del siglo XVIII y uno aprende mucho con su lectura.
The island under the sea was published in 2009. The novel begins on the island of Saint-Domingue, a French colony (now Haiti), in the 18th century and tells the history of a nine-year-old slave girl named Zarité, who is sold to the owner of a sugar plantation. The struggle for her freedom and survival becomes the main point of the history, in a world marked by oppression, discrimination and slavery. The story traverses the Haitian revolution and offers a deep and emotional insight into the history of this country. I particularly like novels that touch on historical events because in them we learn much more about the subject. It may seem that it is just another novel of the many that the author has, which deals with the overcoming of a woman and her freedom. In this case for me it was different because of its history and the fact that it is narrated through the eyes of a little slave girl.
La isla bajo el mar fue publicada en el año 2009. La novela comienza en la isla de Saint-Domingue, colonia francesa (actual Haití), en el siglo XVIII y cuenta la historia de una niña esclava de nueve años llamada Zarité, que es vendida al dueño de una plantación de azúcar. La lucha por su libertad y supervivencia se convierte en el punto principal de la historia, en un mundo marcado por la opresión, la discriminación y la esclavitud. La historia atraviesa la revolución Haitiana y ofrece una visión profunda y emotiva de la historia de este país. Particularmente me gustan mucho las novelas que tocan hechos históricos porque en ellas aprendemos mucho más sobre el tema. Puede parecer que es otra novela más de las muchas que tiene la autora, que trata sobre la superación de una mujer y sobre su libertad. En este caso para mí fue diferente por su historia y por el hecho de que se narre bajo los ojos de una pequeña esclava.
Romance and adventure are two genres that blend very well in this novel, and Zarité strikes me as a character with such a rich and believable history that it feels like she existed at some point in history. Her life, painful and full of conflicts, is very well detailed and blends with the events that led to the Haitian revolution for the struggle for independence in a very good way. At one point it is very realistic and, as I said, it feels like we are reading a biography of a person who really existed.
El romance y la aventura son dos géneros que se mezclan muy bien en esta novela, y Zarité me parece un personaje con una historia tan rica y creíble que da la sensación que existió en algún momento de la historia. Su vida, dolorosa y llena de conflictos, está muy bien detallada y se mezcla con los acontecimientos que llevaron a la revolución Haitiana por la lucha de la independencia de muy buena manera. En un momento resulta muy realista y, como dije, parece que leemos una biografía de una persona que realmente existió.
I have read that, being a long novel, many readers may find it dense; however, at no time I found it to be so, on the contrary, it attracted me a lot to the point that it is my favorite of those I have read by this fantastic author. I think it excellently achieved its goal of showing us the harsh reality that was lived in times of slavery, where the great lords and slaves lived together in such an unequal and unfair way.
He leído por ahí que, al ser una novela larga, muchos lectores la pueden encontrar densa; sin embargo, en ningún momento me pareció que lo fuera, todo lo contrario, me atrajo un montón al punto que es mi favorita de las que he leído de esta fantástica autora. Me parece excelentemente logrado su objetivo de mostrarnos la cruda realidad que se vivía en tiempos de esclavitud, donde los grandes señores y los esclavos convivían de una manera tan desigual y poco justa.
If you like historical novels this is an excellent option to consider. I highly recommend it.
