There is a book that has shaped the childhood of all Cubans, and perhaps those in other parts of the world. This book is written with an educational focus; it shows us the stories and legends of different continents, bringing us closer to other peoples and learning about their ways of life. The title of this book is Oros viejos (Old Golds) by Herminio Almendros in its 2003 edition with illustrations by Bladimir González.
Herminio Almendros, born in Albacete, Spain, in 1898 and died in Havana in 1974, was a Spanish educator, essayist, and university professor who came to Cuba in 1939, exiled for his republican ideas following the Spanish Civil War.
This man dedicated 35 years of his creative activity to Cuban education, with important contributions to the teaching of the mother tongue, literature for children and young people, and the work of Martí, school organization, and the training of our teachers.
That is why in this book we find various relevant legends that mark events such as the existence of the breadfruit tree and the discovery of fire, introducing us to the wonderful world that we have not yet explored in our little childhood imaginations, although this book is capable of surprising even adults.
One of the author's fundamental strengths was the perspicacity of writing each story with humility and simplicity, linking the most passionate loves with the most surprising adventures.
The book, divided into sixteen regions, begins with North America and the legend The Love of Volcanoes, related to the Aztec people, one of the most important Mesoamerican civilizations.
The story is linked to the power of the city of Tecnochtitlán (the imperial city) and all the other tribes and cities that paid tribute to it, but these were not as happy as they could have been. Thus, a brave warrior, the chief of Tlaxcala, read in the stars the possibility of freeing his people from such a yoke by rebelling against the power of the imperial city. However, the Chief had a beautiful daughter, golden as the grains of corn, with whom the bravest of the young warriors, Popocatépetl, was completely in love. She was also entrusted with leading the rebel armies. He had only one request if he returned alive: the hand of the chief's daughter, whom he loved madly. The Chief agreed to the request of his greatest warrior.
Upon his triumphant return, the darkest news awaited him: the beloved princess lay dead in her tomb carved into the rock. It was decided to take her and her grief to the highest peak and accompany her with the fire of his torch. Thus the two lovers remain, like two mountains that outline their snowy peaks under the sky of present-day Mexico. The love of the two volcanoes that guard this present-day city: Popocatépetl and Ixtaccíhuatl.
Other stories in the book come from the Mayans of the Yucatán Peninsula and Central America, or from the inhabitants of South America and the Antilles, from the Quichua and Aymara, or from the Araucanians with their enormous and brave warrior Caupolican.
There are also legends of the Guaraní or those related to the conquest of fire from North America with the Red Indians, from New Zealand with Manui the fire-bringer, or the ancient grace and presence of the great Prometheus.
Other territories, such as Japan, China, and India, are not overlooked, where we find the famous tales of the mongoose and the serpent.
There are also tales from Arabia and Europe: the Rhineland, Russia, Scandinavia, the British Isles, and of course the Black Continent of Africa, full of beautiful stories like that of Samba Gana.
Each of the pages I found here has been a total joy to read, a pleasure, and a source of knowledge since my childhood. I am grateful to the author for this book, which truly teaches us how to be closer to the other worlds that coexist with our own, and to the reader of so many wonders.

Existe un libro el cual a marcado la niñez de todos los cubanos y quizás de otros lugares del mundo. Este es un libro escrito bajo el matiz de la enseñanza, nos muestra las historias y leyendas de los diferentes continentes del mundo, a manera de acercarnos a los otros los pueblos y conocer sus modos de vida. El nombre de este libro es Oros viejos de Herminio Almendros en su edición del 2003 con ilustraciones de Bladimir González.
Herminio Almendros, nacido en Albacete, España, en 1898 y fallecido en La Habana en 1974, fue un pedagogo español, ensayista y profesor universitario, que vino a Cuba en 1939, desterrado por sus ideas republicanas a raíz de la Guerra Civil Española.
Este hombre dedicó a la educación cubana 35 años de su actividad creadora, con aportes importantes a la enseñanza de la lengua materna, la literatura para niños y jóvenes, y la obra Martiana, la organización escolar y la preparación de nuestros maestros.
Es por ello que en este libro encontramos diferentes leyendas de relevancia que marcan hechos como la existencia del árbol de pan y el descubrimiento del fuego, introduciéndonos en el maravilloso mundo que aún no hemos explorado en nuestra pequeña imaginación de niño, aunque este libro es capaz de sorprender hasta a los propios adultos.
Uno de los baluartes fundamentales del autor fue la perspicacia de escribir cada historia con humildad y sencillez, vinculando los amores más apasionados con las más sorprendentes aventuras.
El libro dividido en dieciceis regiones comienza por América del norte y la leyenda El amor de los volcanes, relacionada con el pueblo Azteca, una de las civilizaciones mesoamericanas más importantes.
La historia vinculada al poder de la ciudad de Tecnochtitlán (cudad imperial) y todas llas otras tribus y ciudades que le rendían y pagaban tributos, no siendo estos todo lo felices que podían ser. De esta forma un valiente guerrero, cacique de Tlaxcala leyó en las estrellas la posibilidad de liberar su pueblo de tal yugo revelándose ante el poder de la ciudad imperial, pero el Cacique tenía una hermosa hija, dorada como los granos del maíz, de quien el más valiente de los jóvenes guerreros Popocatépetl estaba completamente enamorado y que además tenía la encomienda de dirigir las huestes rebeldes, solo teniendo una petición si regresaba con vida, la mano de la hija del cacique a quien amaba con locura, accediendo el Cacique a la petición de su mayor guerrero.
A su regreso triunfante la noticia más oscura lo esperaba, la princesa amada yacía muerta en su tumba labrada en la roca. Y se decide llevarla junto a su dolor a la cima más alta y la compaña con el fuego de su antorcha. Así quedan los dos amantes, como dos montañas que perfilan sus cumbres nevadas bajo el cielo del actual México. El amor de los dos volcanes que custodian esta ciudad actual. Popocatépetl y Ixtaccíhualt.
Otras historias en el libro provienen de los Mayas en la península de Yucatán y América central, o de los habitantes de América del sur y las Antillas, de los Quichuas y Aimaras o de los Araucanos con su enorme y valiente guerrero Caupolícan.
También están las leyendas de los Guaraníes o las relacionadas a la conquista del fuego provenientes de la América del norte con los Pieles Rojas, de nueva Zelanda con Manui el traedor del fuego o la antigua gracia y la presencia del gran Prometeo.
No son pasados por alto otros territorios como Japón, China, La India, donde encontramos el afamado cuentos de la mangosta y la serpiente.
También están los cuentos de Arabia y los de Europa: los países del Rin, Rusia, Escandinavia, Islas británicas y por supuesto el continente negro África, lleno de hermosas historias como la de Samba Gana.
Cada una de las páginas que aquí encontré, han sido desde mi niñez un disfrute total de lectura, placer y conocimiento que agradezco al autor por que este es un libro de verdadero poder de enseñanza que nos permite estar más cerca de los otros mundos que cohabitan el nuestro, y tu lector de tantas maravillas.
