En este libro que a pesar de estar dividido en 19 cuentos fenomenales y de una crudeza devastadora, me funcionó completamente como una novela.
Algo interesante en esta historia es que su protagonista y narrador a su vez no tiene nombre, es solo un joven que ha culminado el bachiller y que luego de los exámenes médicos se ve amontonado junto a otros en un tren que viajará a largas distancias junto al humo del cigarro y los olores y sudores de tantos hombres juntos, amontonados como reces que van al matadero. Creo que uno de los objetivos fundamentales de su autor Raúl Leyva Pupo es que cada uno de los lectores asuma la posición del protagonista y sea capaz de recrear e incrementar la historia desde su propia imaginación y para ello nos da las herramientas suficientes.
La historia está contada milimétricamente realista y a su vez con un lenguaje que manejan las nuevas generaciones donde no falta el sexismo, la discriminación, el machismo, la prostitución y muchas otras cuestiones sociales que subyacen en la Cuba actual.
Otro aspecto interesante es la cantidad de muchachos diferentes que conoce el protagonista o de los cuales cuenta su visión de cada historia, siempre buscando una forma de explicar las causas de sus avatares y complicaciones como seres humanos al fin y al cabo.
Así aparecen (ya con nombres y otros no), el negro que al sentirse discriminado a la máxima potencia arremete a golpes contra quien lo hace, el flaco o Manuel que que pasa la noche junto al negro compartiendo los sudores dentro del tren que viaja hacia la unidad militar, Beitys que recibió un tiro en la pierna, Joaquín que intentó ahorcarse, Cotrina que vive al lado de los corrales de vacas y Marcos el electrocutado. Todos conocidos en la sala de ingresos de la unidad militar donde muchos no por accidente van a parar para salvaguardarse de las humillaciones de los oficiales o del rigor de la base.
Lo cierto es que este es un libro importante para acercarnos desde la ficción y la realidad de los jóvenes que han terminado su adolescencia y ya casi como hombres se enfrentan a un mundo desconocido plagado de experiencias que pueden ser la de cualquiera seas del lugar que seas mientras el servicio militar activo sea obligatorio.
