A big hello to all the friends at Shadow Hunters! We're already in the last week of May and summer is just around the corner. I'd love to tell you I have plans to go to the beach, but unfortunately, the reality is that I'll be teaching theory and practical lab classes. This week in particular was horrible, because I spent 12 hours in the middle of working on the laboratory practices, and that's why this post would be the second part of my post from last week, where we started to organize everything necessary for the different teaching units to start the laboratory activities. Well, yesterday I was accompanying the professor to the subcellular fractionation lab until 7 pm in that infernal lab, but to our delight it went successfully! That morning, before the lab started, I took a walk around the empty labs and remembered that this week I would share the reflection of the laminar flow hood, which, due to its size, reflected a wide image of the lab windows.

The student enrollment has 2 sections, so 2 laboratories were opened. I went to the first laminar flow hood, and there you can see how the window is reflected in the glass of the hood, but I didn't like that reflection for several reasons. The first is that there was nothing inside, and it gave the impression that someone was working in that hood. So I went to the laminar flow hood in the second lab, where we keep the liquid and volatile reagents, and there we found the reflection of the lab window in much better detail. We lowered the safety glass of the fume hood completely to try to capture more reflected elements, but we barely managed to capture a few of the lab benches. Then I tried to capture the reflection on the right side of the lab, but it was almost invisible—it was the long lab benches and the whiteboard! In fact, a colleague, a food technology professor, was sitting on one of those benches to the right of the safety glass, but unfortunately, that reflection is barely visible in detail.
We normally use these fume hoods only to store highly volatile reagents. The empty one is used to fumigate drums used in kymographs for electrophysiological measurements. It's funny because in both cases, these hoods aren't meant for that. Their true purpose is for sterile tissue culture, but anyway, in our case, I can only say that we at least minimized the contamination of our fume hood. I loved the reflection created in this glass because it not only shows the laboratory windows, but also, beyond them, the concrete lattice wall with light filtering through its openings—a magnificent composition captured from the safety glass of a laminar flow hood. Ya estamos en la última semana de mayo y el verano ya se acerca, me gustaría decirles que tengo planes de ir a la playa pero lamentablemente mi realidad es que estaré dictando clases de teoría y práctica de laboratorio. Esta semana en particular fue horrible, porque estuve 12 horas en plena faena con las prácticas de laboratorio, y por eso esta publicación vendría siendo la segunda parte de mi post de la semana pasada, donde comenzábamos a organizar todo lo necesario las distintas unidades docentes para iniciar las actividades de los laboratorios. Bien, ayer estuve acompañando al profesor de la práctica de fraccionamiento subcelular hasta las 7 pm en esa endemoniada práctica pero para nuestra alegría salió exitosamente! Esa mañana, antes de que la práctica comenzara di una vuelta sobre los laboratorios vacíos y recordé que para esta semana les compartiría el reflejo de la campana de flujo laminar que por su envergadura, reflejaba una amplia imagen de los ventanales del laboratorio.

La matrícula de estudiantes tiene 2 secciones, así que se abrieron 2 laboratorios. Fui a la primera campana de flujo laminar y allí pueden ver como se refleja el ventanal en el vidrio de la campana, pero ese reflejo no me gusto por varias razones, la primera es que no había nada adentro y daba la impresión que se estaba trabajando en esa campana, así que fuí a la campana de flujo laminar del segundo laboratorio donde tenemos guardados los reactivos líquidos y volátiles donde nos encontramos con mejor detalle el reflejo del ventanal del laboratorio. Bajamos completamente el vidrio de seguridad de la campana para tratar de capturar más elementos reflejados pero a duras penas logramos capturar algunos de los mesones del laboratorio, luego traté de capturar el reflejo del lado derecho del laboratorio pero casi no se veía el reflejo, que eran los largos mesones del laboratorio y el pizarrón! De hecho en uno de esos mesones estaba sentado un colega profesor de tecnología de alimentos a la derecha del vidrio de seguridad, pero lamentablemente casi no se ve en detalle ese reflejo.
Normalmente estas campana la usamos solo para almacenar los reactivos con alta volatilidad, la campana que estaba vacía es utilizada para ahumar tambores que se utilizan en kimógrafos para hacer medidas de electrofisiología. Es gracioso porque en ambos casos esas campanas no son para eso, la verdadera utilidad de estas campanas es para hacer cultivos de tejidos en esterilidad pero en fin, en nuestro caso solo puedo decir que al menos hemos contaminado lo menos posible nuestra campana. El reflejo que se generó en este vidrio me encantó porque no solamente muestra las ventanas del laboratorio, sino más allá se ve reflejado la pared de celosía de concreto con la luz entrando en sus huecos, una composición magnífica capturada desde el vidrio de seguridad de una campana de flujo laminar.
