Every time I walk Pupy, my faithful canine companion, my gaze stops at a very special place: the Gustavo Pozo primary school, located on 39th Street in the La Timba neighborhood of the Plaza de la Revolución municipality of Havana, very close to my house. It is not an ordinary school; its unique architectural design always arouses my curiosity and admiration.
In my country, access to the inside of schools is not permitted for security reasons, which has prevented me from exploring beyond their walls. Despite this, I have managed to take photos of those circles that attract me so much, of the semicircular terrace and the small amphitheater that are part of the complex, as well as the lush vegetation that exists there.
Cada vez que paseo a Pupy, mi fiel compañero canino, mi mirada se detiene en un lugar muy especial: la escuela primaria Gustavo Pozo, ubicada en la calle 39 del reparto La Timba del mmunicipio Plaza de la Revolución de la Habana, muy cerca de mi casa. No es una escuela común y corriente; su singular diseño arquitectónico siempre despierta mi curiosidad y admiración.
En mi país, el acceso al interior de las escuelas no está permitido por razones de seguridad, lo que me ha impedido explorar más allá de sus muros. A pesar de ello, he conseguido sacar fotos de esos círculos que tanto me atraen, de la terraza semicircular y del pequeño anfiteatro que forman parte del complejo, así como de la frondosa vegetación que allí existe.
This school, made up of seven circular buildings, has a structure that I find fascinating. I have always been struck by the circular shape of its buildings, a pattern that is repeated throughout the complex. Thanks to my neighbor's son who studies there, I have learned that each circle houses two classrooms, so each one is shaped like a semicircle. This organization seems perfect to me to encourage interaction between students and teacher, allowing attention to be focused on teaching and for the teacher,to have all his students in sight. I confess that I would have loved to study in a classroom with this original shape.
The classrooms also look very airy because they have windows with shutters that reach from the ceiling to the floor at different angles of the semicircle
Esta escuela, formada por siete edificios circulares, tiene una estructura que me resulta fascinante. Siempre me ha llamado la atención la forma circular de sus edificios, un patrón que se repite en todo el complejo. Gracias al hijo de mi vecina que estudia allí, he aprendido que cada círculo alberga dos aulas, por lo que cada una tiene forma de semicírculo. Esta organización me parece perfecta para fomentar la interacción entre alumnos y profesor, permitiendo que la atención se centre en la enseñanza y que el profesor, tenga a la vista a todos sus alumnos. Confieso que me hubiera encantado estudiar en un aula con esta original forma.

Right next to the primary school, there is a children's circle, also circular in structure, but in this case, it is a single circle that houses the classrooms for children from 1 to 5 years old. Although I was not able to take many photos of this space, I was able to observe its play area, with a curious parabola-shaped construction where I have seen the little ones playing on other occasions, although today the area was deserted. There is also another peak-shaped building with a circle and I thought it was a sundial but when I turned around I saw that it had stairs to access it, so it is a place for children to simply play.
Justo al lado de la escuela primaria, hay un círculo infantil, también de estructura circular, pero en este caso, se trata de un solo círculo que alberga las aulas para niños de 1 a 5 años. Aunque no pude sacar muchas fotos de este espacio, sí pude observar su zona de juegos, con una curiosa construcción en forma de parábola donde he visto a los más pequeños jugando en otras ocasiones, aunque hoy la zona estaba desierta. También hay otro edificio en forma de pico con un círculo y pensé que era un reloj de sol pero al darme la vuelta vi que tenía escaleras para acceder, por lo que es un lugar para que los niños simplemente jueguen.
The railings surrounding both buildings limit the view a little, but despite this, I was able to appreciate the beauty and uniqueness of this educational complex. It is a space that radiates tranquility and that seems to me an ideal place to educate future generations, a place where creativity and learning seem to merge into a single concept. It is no coincidence that this school has received several awards for the academic results of its students.
Las barandillas que rodean ambos edificios limitan un poco la vista, pero a pesar de ello, pude apreciar la belleza y singularidad de este complejo educativo. Es un espacio que irradia tranquilidad y que me parece un lugar ideal para educar a las futuras generaciones, un lugar donde la creatividad y el aprendizaje parecen fundirse en un solo concepto. No es casualidad que esta escuela haya recibido varios premios por los resultados académicos de sus alumnos.
The history of this place is equally fascinating. Its construction was completed in 1965. The round shape of the classrooms, with their flat roofs, responds to the desire to create a space where children feel free and unrestricted, thus fostering their creativity and development. I really appreciate the green areas, although they are not very well maintained because there are many dry leaves, but there are quite a few trees between those circles covered with orange bricks that contrast greatly with the green of the plants.
La historia de este lugar es igualmente fascinante. Su construcción se terminó en 1965. La forma redonda de las aulas, con sus techos planos, responde al deseo de crear un espacio donde los niños se sientan libres y sin restricciones, fomentando así su creatividad y desarrollo. Aprecio mucho las áreas verdes, aunque no están muy bien cuidadas porque hay muchas hojas secas, pero hay bastantes árboles entre esos círculos cubiertos de ladrillos anaranjados que contrastan mucho con el verde de las plantas.
This walk through the Gustavo Pozo school always leaves me reflecting on the importance of educational spaces in the formation of children and adolescents. It is a place that inspires, a place that invites us to dream and believe in the power of education to transform the world.
