No sé si el término consuegra sea de dominio mundial, pero para el que no sepa, la consuegra es la mamá de la nuera o del yerno, pero en confianza, es como la otra mamá que te toca por ley, seas novio o novia, esposo o esposa. Ayer domingo, fui con mi hijo y su novia a visitar su madre quien de paso nos había invitado a almorzar.

I don't know if the term "consuegra" is universally known, but for those who don't know, a consuegra is the mother of your daughter-in-law or son-in-law. But in casual terms, she's like the other mother you get by law, whether you're a boyfriend or girlfriend, husband or wife. Yesterday, Sunday, I went with my son and his girlfriend to visit her mother, who had also invited us for lunch.
Ya era hora de ir a conocer a la madre de mi nuera. Anteriormente hubo oportunidad pero por cuestiones de trabajo asuntos de salud y personales, yo no había podido conocerla. Salimos caminado porque el sitio no que muy distante. Mi hijo y su novia iban delante a un paso ligero y rápido que yo no podía alcanzar. A cada rato se paran a esperar pir mí.
It was about time I went to meet the mother of my future daughter-in-law. There had been opportunities before, but due to work, health issues, and personal matters, I hadn't been able to meet her. We walked because the place wasn't too far. My son and his girlfriend were ahead, walking at a brisk, fast pace that I couldn't keep up with. Every so often, they'd stop and wait for me.
El barrio de la consuegra queda en las afueras del pueblo, por uno de esos caminos de tierra que parecen la pista de un rally. Todo el viaje fue saltando como pop corn, esquivando hoyos y vacas echadas en medio de la carretera. Pero ibamos respirando el aire puros y admirado el verdor del campo que da una frescura que ni el aire acondicionado te regala.
The consuegra's neighborhood is on the outskirts of town, along one of those dirt roads that feel like a rally race track. The whole trip was bouncing around like popcorn, dodging potholes and cows lying in the middle of the road. But we were breathing fresh air and admiring the greenness of the countryside, which gives a coolness that not even air conditioning can offer.
El barrio es conocido como "la fabrica de machetes", por haber allí precisamente una fábrica de machetes. Llegamos a las once de la mañana y enseguida nos brindaron café. El café era de esos que te quitan el sueño por tres días. La casa de la consuegra es acogedora e impecable, con su portal y un patio lleno de flores y matas de aguacate cargadas de frutos.
The neighborhood is known as "the machete factory" because there's actually a machete factory there. We arrived at eleven in the morning, and right away they offered us coffee. It was the kind of coffee that keeps you awake for three days. The consuegra's house is cozy and spotless, with a front porch and a backyard full of flowers and avocado trees loaded with fruit.
Algo que llamó mi atención fue esta carabela que colgaba en el fondo de la casa. Ne dijeron que era para las malas vistas y las malas lenguas.
One thing that caught my attention was this little galleon hanging at the back of the house. They told me it was to ward off evil eyes and gossip.

We sat in the living room and had a pleasant conversation while a delicious aroma from the kitchen kept us company. The consuegra turned out to be very young and nice.
Luego de un rato, la consuegra empezó a servir la comida. Un almuerzo sobroso compuesto por arroz congris de frijol negro, tostones de plátano burro, una ensalada de aguacate de su propio patio y un bistec de lechón que se deshacía en la boca. “Es puerco de la casa, criado con palmiche y corojo”, dijo la consuegra.
After a while, the consuegra started serving the food. A flavorful lunch consisting of Congris rice with black beans, burro plantain tostones, an avocado salad from her own backyard, and a suckling pig steak that melted in your mouth. "It's home-raised pork, fed on palm fruit and corojo palm," said the consuegra.
Agarré tenedor y cuchara y me serví sin pena. Mientras comía, mi hijo me miraba de reojo como diciendo: “No te pases, que después te da una indigestión”. Pero la consuegra insistía: “Come, que para eso cociné". En la mesa nos acompañaron las dos abuelas de mi nuera. Y yo, dale que dale, hasta que tuve que soltar el cierre del pantalón. La verdad es que pesqué una jartura de padre y señor mío.
I grabbed a fork and spoon and helped myself without hesitation. While I was eating, my son kept glancing at me as if to say, "Don't overdo it, or you'll get indigestion." But the consuegra insisted, "Eat, that's why I cooked." At the table, we were joined by my daughter-in-law's two grandmothers. And I kept going, and going, until I had to unbutton my pants. Honestly, I ate a feast fit for a king.
Mi hijo y la novia ya tienen más de un año de relación, tiempo considerable teniendo en cuenta lo volátil qué son las relaciones actuales. Han sobrevivido al tiempo, espero les dure mucho.
My son and his girlfriend have been together for over a year now—a considerable amount of time, given how fleeting relationships are these days. They've survived the test of time, and I hope it lasts for them a long time.
Cuando nos fuimos, la consuegra me dio unos aguacates y un gran abrazo. En el camino de vuelta, mi hijo me dijo: “¿Viste qué bien te trató?”. Y yo le contesté: “Claro, sibyo soy muy simpática ”. Me hijo se echóca reír. Pero en el fondo, qué bueno es tener una consuegra en el campo y un almuerzo así. Eso no lo cambia ni la comida de un hotel cinco estrellas.
When we left, the consuegra gave me some avocados and a big hug. On the way back, my son said to me, "See how well she treated you?" And I replied, "Of course, silly, I'm very charming." My son burst out laughing. But deep down, it's so nice to have a consuegra in the countryside and a lunch like that. Not even a five-star hotel meal can beat that.
