Kuah Beulangong "a typical Acehnese food served during certain events"

in Daily Blog17 days ago

One of the typical Acehnese culinary delights that many people know is kuah belangong. This typical Acehnese food is often found when celebrating major holidays in Aceh, one of which is the birthday of the Prophet Muhammad sallallaahu alaihi wasallam.

Kuah Bulangong is a traditional Acehnese dish. Beef is usually the main ingredient, but over time, the beef has been adapted to include goat or buffalo.

My friends...
If you followed my blog a few weeks ago, I also shared one of Aceh's traditions, Intat Linto Baroe.
Well...
On this day, this custom and tradition are celebrated by the local community. Therefore, it can be said that this ceremony is a major event with various events, including giving a simple khanduri (a kind of offering) to visitors to express their gratitude to the newlyweds. The meal usually includes Kuah Bulangong. I took some time during the event to capture some images of my village's cooking Kuah Beulangong.

The name Beulagong comes from the word beulaga, which means large cauldron.
People in Aceh cook this beulangong soup in large portions, requiring a large wok to hold around 200 servings.
You can see this in the image I shared above, which requires several people to switch sides at the large wok while cooking. This is because in addition to extra effort, this activity also requires patience.

The cooking process for Kuah Beulangong takes about two hours and requires a lot of energy. Furthermore, this Acehnese specialty is specifically for men, as one of the underlying philosophies behind this dish is evident. As you can see in the pictures, so much energy is expended on this dish, and there are no women involved.

A little about the history of Kuah Beulangong. Back in the day, trade brought traders from various regions to Aceh. These traders stayed for a while to spread Islam, specifically in Banda Aceh, Aceh Besar, Pidie, and parts of West Aceh. As you can see in some of my blogs, it states that this region was once a kingdom.

Well...
Kuah Bulangong has long been a culinary tradition for the Acehnese people to celebrate and welcome the rice planting season.
Before going to the rice fields, a thanksgiving ceremony is held, asking the Almighty for a good harvest, protection from pests, and a good harvest.

Acehnese people would slaughter a cow or goat, depending on the individual and family's means. This tradition continues to this day as a thanksgiving ceremony at weddings, celebrations, and other celebratory events.
Today, no celebration is complete without the presence of a dish called kuah bulangong, a dish shared with family and fellow Muslims in Aceh.
