Looking back at my service year in Delta State still brings a smile to my face. Life as a corps member is one of those experiences you can never forget part challenge, part struggle, but mostly full of fun and memories.
One of the biggest challenges we faced was water. Fetching water felt like a daily Olympics. Sometimes, you’d carry your bucket with pride, only to return home with half of it spilled on your clothes. Other times, you’d queue at the borehole like it was a concert ticket stand. Yet, somehow, we made it fun. We’d gist, laugh, and even sing while waiting. By the time you finally got your water, it felt like a victory worth celebrating. My dear to fetch water is going going for competition that you must win.
Electricity was another story. PHCN had their own timetable, but unfortunately, we were never informed of it. Lights could go off for days, and when they came back, you’d hear shouts of “Up NEPA!” louder than any stadium cheer. At night, we will sometimes sit outside with lanterns, telling stories, eating roasted corn, or just watching the stars. Funny enough, those nights without light gave us some of the best memories.
At my PPA (Place of Primary Assignment), where I taught, the facilities were poor broken chairs, faded blackboards, and limited materials. But the students’ energy and curiosity kept me going. They reminded me that teaching is not about luxury, but about impact. I might not have had the best classroom, but I gave them the best of my effort.
What truly made it beautiful were my fellow corps members. We were all in it together sharing food, playing football, dancing at CDS days, and laughing at our “suffering.” It was the kind of bond you can’t buy anywhere else.
Serving in Delta wasn’t perfect, but it was real. It taught me patience, resilience, and the art of turning struggles into laughter. If I had to describe it in one word, I’d simply say: unforgettable.
Thanks for Reading, Enjoy your day.
