Tradition: A Guiding Light or a Stumbling Block?

Tradition is very important in the life of every individual today. No matter where you are from, we all have our traditions which have been there for decades. Most of these traditions, we came to meet and so automatically, we in a way grew up with them.

Most people say tradition is what kills us in todays world. Especially we Africans. We tend to abide to our traditions so much such that sometimes we are just stuck to one place due to that. Like they say, religion is just a way of controlling us as a people, some also say tradition is there to do the same thing.

Do I think tradition resists progress? Obviously not. I believe that anyone who wants to succeed will, regardless of their traditional or whatever culture they believe in. One thing I know for a fact is that our culture or tradition isn’t made with the mindset that ‘ oh, my people must not progress’. Obviously not. Everyone , including those who made these traditions which is obviously the general public wish for their own people to progress in whatever they do.

Mostly, what I think tradition does is to keep us in check. Because imagine there were no rules, everyone would just be doing whatever they want. Most of us don’t even know that sometimes tradition and religion help to keep us in check just like the way the laws of every country does. The only twist is that this is actually in a different perspective away from what the laws of our countries touch on.

Personally, I think tradition keeps us going rather than hold us back. Because it makes us appreciate where we come from, what our forefathers went through for us to enjoy what we do have today, and also makes us have some values or morals who hold to a high standard. This way, we will always make sure to do the right thing because in all we do, we always look back to our traditions and if our actions are acceptable traditionally or not. However, I’d say this topic is quite subjective but this is my humble take.

I agree with you. Sometimes when I think about these superstitions, I believe most of them are in place to protect the environment. Like the one that says don’t go fishing on Tuesdays. That’s definitely a good way to let the ocean rest.

😂😂 they will not listen. When they go and die they will now blame it on the gods.

Yeah this topic is highly subjective but then if there's one thing that we could all agree on discussing this is that every disadvantage has an advantage and vise versa. Traditions are not all detrimental as it has proven to be very helpful in shaping our morals. The good thing is that hose that are deteimental to our existence are phasing out.

Well said!

Thank you 🙂
